Hi, I've been referred to this board by a friend. He told me to ask everyone here about free hosting and which site still has decent hosting. I have a gaming site and need at least 50 megs of webspace. I don't need more than 2 GB of traffic a month. I would get paid hosting, however I'm rather tied down with funds right now. My former host that I was hosted for free was sold, so I need a ne home for my site. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hosting is a service just like any other service that you derive a benefit from. Why should it be free? :)

I have to agree with Bob, I mean you wouldn't go into a BMW dealership and expect a free car because you don't want to pay for one, would you? :D :D

Not anymore. Free and good hosting was when the market was good, and the banner ads paid for the servers. Now, there is no way to offer good quality and free hosting.

Well if you go to one of those pyramid meetings they usually give u a free lunch .. and if you quick enough .. you can get out just before they drag you into a lecture ....

Just the way everything online is moving these days...maturing would be a better word :)

From yahoo to hotmail (some of the biggest bastions of free services, business models are changing as peoples attitudes adjust and realise they 'need' these services.

I wonder how long before we start paying for ICQ...

So, your free host shut down.

Have you thought about why that could be? :D

Yes, there are other free hosts out there. If you don't mind moving from host to host every couple of months when each shuts down, this is a very good plan!

Or, you could shell out a measly $5-10/month and get decent service. Five dollars a month, man! You can't even get a Happy Meal for that anymore! Getting dirt cheap hosting has never been easier.

I was hosted free but it was a pay host. I had an agreement with them thank you very much. You guys are mean :P
I was with Utopiahosting. I was a silent partner and was willing to help Akash with anything he needed in exchange for free hosting. However since he sold it my free hosting is gone now. I'm a good friend of Akash and hope the best for him in his struggles to come.

This is what I have found odd on many of these boards. We want free hosting, no pop-ups, with ftp,ssi and ssl. Sometimes it becomes amusing, and want to ask them, do you want to eat for free also.

Ok so I put the wrong thing in akash. Sorry UH isn't shuting down, just changing owners. Akash you told me to post here asking about free web hosting...dunno why you warned me if you requested that I do it....Do I want to eat for free too? Sure!:stickout:

And thank you to all who contacted me about hosting. I am very grateful for the offers. It was great to hear from:

All of these sites were quick to respond to my questions and were very polite. To anyone else who hasn't checked them out I suggest that you do.

GeoCities is probably your best bet if you haven't already found one.

I decided to go with Rockethosts. I suggest seeking hosting with them if your looking. Their server is fast in connections! I run better on Rockethosts than on UH w00t! Putting my site up was quick and painless and the service is absolutly perfect so far! Seriously though seek them out! To be sure that I'm not lying through my teeth I have a gaming site:

and even though you are a close friend of mine...wait another couple months before praising rockethosts....;)

Yes, you should always give it a couple months before praising a new host. Sometimes support doesn't continue past the initial setup with many hosts or other problems caused by the host may occur. I stressed "by the host" because 2 of the big DCs recently suffered issues like sustained ddos attacks (Burst & DV2) that hosts had no control over. In these cases you want to make sure that information from your host reaches you in a timely fashion regarding the status of the situation.
But by all means, if in a couple months, you are as ecstatic about your host as you are now, c'mon back and tell everyone. If you're not as happy, c'mon back and tell us why, too.
