View Full Version : Buying a domain else where?
Itslee 10-28-2009, 11:40 PM Right i had been playing about on the demo of WHM and it hit me how does the domain registration work?
Example: If my host offered domains for £10 but say another site such as 123-reg.co.uk offered them for £6 could i create a new domain with 123-reg and point the DNS to my host dns name? Can this be done?
MichelleH 10-29-2009, 12:28 AM Yes you can. you can buy a domain from any registrar and point the nameservers to your host. Just choose the option in your registrar for Custom Name Servers
SSHocker 10-29-2009, 12:37 AM I'd recommend you buy the domain away from your host, even if your host offers it cheaper.
If the relationship sours between you and your host, it removes one more problem associated with the moving process.

you can and you should. As SSHocker said, it is better if your host doesn't have access to your domain and vice versa. If you want to host with your registrar, make sure their hosting and registration services are separated, e.g. you can buy one item without being obliged to buy the other.
angel_ivy 10-29-2009, 03:51 AM see where sell cheaper then buy from them :)
hosting and domain separated..will depends on you. If you want easier management, then get your domains and hosting with the same provider. If you don't mind all the hard work, then go for separate provider for your hosting and domains. :)

i don't see where is hard work with having separated services. From domain registrar you only need to 1) buy domain 2) configure it according to the settings your host gave you (point to DNS, IP etc). The rest of work is with your hosting provider.
When host sells you hosting along with a "free" domain, in most cases when moving from them you will need to pay additional fee to get the domain. and this fee will be a way more then you'd pay to registrar directly.
So: if you are 100% sure that you stay with the same hosting company for ever, keep all your stuff with them. But once its time to move, be ready to have a big headache. especially if you have some unresolved payment issues.
recoil 10-30-2009, 02:17 AM I see this brought up a lot, especially in the last two years.
But i would contend that the large majority of folks shopping for hosting don't want to go elsewhere to buy a domain. Aside frrom that many registrars also offer hosting themselves.
I think the right approach is to educate the customer and put them in control of the domain (registrar login, proper registrant info, auth contact).
I've never been a fan of tying a free registraton or renewal for the very reason that was mentioned. I see it as analogous to LNP - if I sign-up wit Verizon sure they give me the number but I can then port it to another provider.
recoil 10-30-2009, 02:21 AM To itslee I'd say buy from the cheaper vendor. Just be sure to save that login information and keep your information current since your host won't provide you a reminder, most likely.

Fully supported. I don't know where this stereotype of separating domain name registration and hosting comes from. Perhaps it has something to do with those fantastic all-inclusive-unlimited packages that are so incredibly CHEAP unless you refuse being tied to the provider for about two years or so.

Probably from issues where the reseller keeps the domain in his name, rather than the buyer's. And then when said host goes belly up, good luck contacting him/her and getting domain transferred to your name. ;)
And that still happens.
When you buy your own name from a top registrar, such as GoDaddy or Name.com, YOU control it, YOUR name is on the admin contact and no one can disappear with it (unless your password gets compromised by you, of course! ;))
SSHocker 10-30-2009, 08:41 AM I can't see why people get so fussed about price shopping for a domain or even finding a host that offers a free domain. If you're paying full retail price, they're under $10/yr. If your website isn't worth $10/yr it must one hell of a website!
Itslee 10-30-2009, 12:52 PM Im looking into 123-reg.co.uk to host my domains as they seem 100% trusted and the top search uk domain site.
Thanks for the info!
eric_pu 10-31-2009, 06:45 AM It is not all on the money. There are some threads on WHT talking about it.
People all suggest buying your domain and your hosting separetely.

Definitely agree, I host most of my domains with Godaddy or other well known registrars and take my hosting some place else.
