View Full Version : Registrar with nameserver options
neurowave 11-19-2002, 09:42 AM Hello,
I'm looking to transfer my domain names to a registrar that provides nameservers that I can modify with my domain name (ns1.realityslip.com, ns2.realityslip.com) etc and point them to my ip addresses. At the moment my registrar only parks domains, they don't offer any nameserver services.
Can anyone point me to a good registrar that offers this? I've heard goddady.com and namecheap.com might offer these. Anyone else?
Best Regards
ZiCmaN 11-19-2002, 09:48 AM almost all do offer this. It is normally under the link or option to "make nameservers based on this domain"
enom and opensrs.org (TUCOWS) resellers also offer these options.
Good Luck!
Xemion 11-19-2002, 12:56 PM You are correct, we (NameCheap) do offer that functionality. Thanks.
neurowave 11-19-2002, 02:04 PM Thanks for the replies, however a few minutes after I posted this topic I found a text link under my domain info that says "Register Name Server".
I'm guessing this is what I wanted. I still might need a new Registrar though because everytime I try to buy another domain from my current registrar it fails.
Thanks again for the help.
neurowave 11-19-2002, 10:02 PM Well I went into "Register Name Server" and created my two nameservers (ns1.realityslip.com and ns2.realityslip.com). However, nothing happened. It submitted my request and brought me back to the Name Server page. I don't see any info on these new nameservers I added under my account and I haven't received any emails. Is this normal? Do they have to manually create these and get back to me once it's done?
This is what it says on the "Name Server Registration" page:
You may register or update a name server for domain names that you have registered with us. The name server will need both a host name and an IP address associated with it. Once you register the name server you will be able to use your name server for domain names registered with any registrar.
Please DO NOT enter 'www' with your host name. This is not a redirection service - it will not direct your domain to an IP address. Name servers are used for web hosting purposes. If you are unsure about what a name server is or you need help in registering your name server, please contact us by clicking the 'customer support' link on the left hand side of this page.
Host Name: (input field) .REALITYSLIP.COM
IP Address: (input field).(input field).(input field).(input field)
Is this not what I wanted?
Thanks for any help, it is much appreciated.
neurowave 11-20-2002, 07:18 AM How can I find out if my registrar is dead? I'm starting to suspect they might have gone out of business. They haven't replied to any emails and when I tried ordering a domain a few days ago with two different credit cards it always said there was a problem verifying the cards. Yet I used both of them elsewhere online and they worked fine.
beachtrader 11-20-2002, 07:27 AM If you are trying to register names and can't and don't get a response to your inquiries you need to transfer to another registrar. You can go just about anywhere you want. A lot of hosting companies provide registrar services and you can always go with the heavyweights: network solutions, etc.
neurowave 11-20-2002, 07:36 AM Hi beachtrader,
I've actually got a dedicated server running at the moment. That's why I'm figuring out this nameserver stuff now, I've had no experience with it previously. I was on shared hosting before and they provided the nameservers.
Sounds like good advice, I plan to move to a new registrar.
beachtrader 11-20-2002, 09:38 AM If you are setting up nameservers on your dedicated take a look at this book:
DNS & Bind
O'Reilly & Associates; ISBN: 0596001584; 4th edition (April 2001)
Very good read for setting up and running Bind.

Networksolutions run an own nameserver all right. Just they don't let you fill in anything as your own nameserver case you don't want to use theirs.
This is what I tried:
I pointed two hostnames
rs1.friz.net
rs2.friz.net
to my dedicated server 81.169.186.226.
Networksolutions don't let you fill in these nameservers for domains registered with them. They say you can only fill in hostnames for domains "you own or manage".
I do own and manage friz.net, however, its registered with twocows.inc. And I guess that is the problem, really. Networksolutions won't take Nameservers from competing registrars. Isn't that hilarious?
If you don't believe me: what I did is, I just pointed two hostnames fom another domain I own,
ns1.csec.de
ns2.csec.de
to my dedicated server 81.169.186.226
and everything works fine. No complaints from networksolutions, they didn't even check if the ip-addresses differ or if those nameservers know the domain in question.
God bless America!
bluzman32 08-22-2004, 01:42 PM I just registered two nameservers with registerfly's services, and they told me to wait 7-8 days for the nameservers to propagate. Is that normal to take that long?
I've been checking every day to see if my nameservers have registered over at http://www.internic.net/whois.html

Normally 2-5 days is normal across all registrars.
