View Full Version : Reseller Hosting vs VPS?

I currently have a VPS which is 20GB HDD, 256MB Ram, 500GB Bandwidth and cPanel. For this, I pay £24 per month.

The Ram is not sufficient and I have been looking at upgrading it but it will cost me an extra £10 per month to get an extra 128MB.

It has been suggested that as I only use my VPS for web hosting (hosting my clients websites), I should look at Reseller Hosting Packages, so after looking around, I saw one from Heart Internet with unlimited hard drive space, unlimited bandwidth, etc.

Would Reseller hosting really be better for me or am I better off sticking with a VPS/Dedicated Server?

Would this unlimited package from Heart Internet REALLY be unlimited (i.e. would I be able to have upwards of 1000 domains (theoretically) registered?

Thanks

You better stick to the VPS. You can get cheaper VPS from Burst.net for about 10$ + 13$ cpanel/whm. You can also get WHWPHP for 7$ a month and offer reseller hosting.

Hope this helped you

It depends what you want, being on a reseller package will mean you don't have to worry about things like patching and troubleshooting issues with the server but I don't believe in unlimited everything packages. Best thing to do is check the terms and conditions for things like maximum allowed resource allocation.

On the down side things that you may know how to fix can take ages by logging a ticket, if you have the time and money stick with a vps or dedicated server

Make sure you check their terms of service and use policies. Many companies have a percent of resource usage limit. While you may have unlimited space and bandwidth you have to watch how many processes your sites will run and how much cpu usage you will need.

Ok, so say I stick with a VPS and cPanel, is there any advantage of it being in the UK rather than the US? US ones seem to be cheaper.

Hello,
Both a VPS and Reseller Hosting Plan have their own benefits and problems. I dont believe that you are getting the full story. Here is a quick list of pros and cons of a VPS and Reseller Account.

VPS PRO's

Root Access - Install anything you want when you want
Control Features - Have Full Control over what features your customers have access too.
cPBackup - Control Full Backups and Full FTP Backups
Less Likely to have oversold resources

VPS CON's

Root Access - You can break things if you re not careful
Costs - Licensing and Management costs can add close to $50.00 extra on top of the server fees.

RESELLER PRO's

Sales/Support Driven - Focus on Sales rather then keeping the server online
More RAM and CPU - The average reseller plan is $19.99 per month. Your host normally has 1-4 GB of RAM to the server. A VPS will have around 256-512 MB for the same rate.

RESELLER CON's

No Root Access - Your host has the final say on what can be installed and what cannot be installed
Too Many - Fly By Night Hosts.

Hello,
[INDENT]Both a VPS and Reseller Hosting Plan have their own benefits and problems....

Thanks for an excellent comparison. I (think) I am sure I want to stick with a VPS for now. The company I was looking at said in their T&C's that you could not use more than 5% of their CPU power, which doesn't seem enough. Maybe a VPS with 1GB Ram would be better?

You can get a very good vps for about 35$ a month with cpanel. Lets say if thats not enough your host will probably allow your to upgrade at any time

From their AUP:
2.2 In your use of the Hosting Services (other than where you are using your own dedicated server), you may not:

2.2.1 use more than 5 % of our server's processing capacity. There are numerous activities that could cause such problems, including (but not limited to) CGI scripts and intensive FTP, PHP or HTTP operations;

1.2 The Hosting Services allow you 'unlimited' server space for normal routine "non-file-distribution" web usage. For websites that allow downloading of video, audio or other files we reserve the right to impose a bandwidth limit of twenty-five (25) gigabytes (26,843,545,600 bytes) per calendar month. Non-file-distribution usage will remain unaffected by any limit imposed on downloading of video, audio or other files.

http://www.heartinternet.co.uk/terms/hi-aup.html

There is no such thing as infinite hosting, there will certainly be a limit at some point.

For reselling hosting, I'd go for reseller hosting. A VPS, especially when the budget is limited, tends to be a bit of a crowded place. The control panel alone often uses 100-200MB of the memory you have. There's little room left for actual hosting.

You could get more "bang for you buck" - £34 ($55USD) to total 384mb RAM ?

You easily could get 768MB RAM for that amount with a decent East Coast provider

If your not experienced with ssh commands and other things, then I would suggest that you go with reseller. Otherwise go with vps.

If you're looking for low latency to the UK from the USA you'll need east coast .. Maybe SolarVPS or Ubiquity Servers they have a few locations.

yea this is true for main root user with fully controlling but vps sometime need addon for your needles like whm/cpanel addon, fantastico and rvskin if you like to use it also :)

Hi!
And..as usual..nobody mentions the additional page load delays from a vps vs a dedicated server.

I would never EVER consider hosting from a vps. Never. I'm sick to the teeth of this..so this will offically be the last time I mention it.

If you don't know how or not willing to manage and monitor a server/vps then go with the reseller plan.

All depends how much resources each website takes. Here is the fact:
One single website called youtube takes more bandwith than the entire internet in the year 2000.

Vps is the best choice if you are looking for something serious. With good amount of resources VPS is the way to go with besides it takes extra costs.
But other way is Reseller to avoid any extra costs with somewhat low resources.

VPS's these days are cheap and you also get control over them just like a dedicated server. You can reinstall the operating system if something goes wrong, reboot, start, stop, install your own software and much more :)
