I wouldn't mind having a few servers their :) Well... not hosting business ones (like servers for Edge Host) ;) RackNine 11-18-2002, 08:07 PM I hope they don't have a male dog, those servers are awfully low in the rack :) -Matt TeleSouthNet 11-18-2002, 08:16 PM It would be good for back up servers. But being in a basement always worried me. What happens when a pipe bursts somewhere in the house alchiba 11-18-2002, 08:17 PM Obviously, this person isn't married. (I've got a PDP-11 hidden behind the furnace. My wife knows nothing about it.) refcom 11-18-2002, 08:17 PM I think its more of just something cool to do. I mean, gets to learn everything inside out himself and have a lot of fun with it. Zoltrix 11-18-2002, 08:52 PM For those of you that have a small, Linux website hosted with Vortech.net, it is contained on the bottom right server (mustang). Hmm... now we know were Vortech gets thier hosting... Originally posted by alchiba Obviously, this person isn't married. (I've got a PDP-11 hidden behind the furnace. My wife knows nothing about it.) Actuly, he says he dose... This is a picture of an additional desk/computer that is set up in the basement that is typically used by my wife for playing online card games and some occasional phone survey work that she does from home. The system is a 1.4Ghz Athlon with 512Mb of RAM and has a LaserJet 3200 Fax/Copier/Scanner hooked to it. Wouldnt you like a wife that would support you to turn your basement into a datacenter? rey 11-18-2002, 09:18 PM I actually would love to have one in my basement myself. I wish there's a fiber line close to my house that I can tap from. Thanks for sharing Chris! :) And I'm married. Vortech 11-20-2002, 07:45 PM Originally posted by Zoltrix Hmm... now we know were Vortech gets thier hosting... Hey thats not me.. :) Thats some other vortech I think its vortech.net.. LoL But still kind of funny.. Zoltrix 11-20-2002, 08:32 PM lol, Yes, Vortech.net is the server he has, :) Something tells me you wouldnt locate your servers in a basement, or Colocate others for that matter.. Vortech 11-20-2002, 08:40 PM yea it would be hard for me to have a DC in FL.. :) No basements here.. LoL I thought vortech.net had gotten an office by now he has been in that basement for a long time I know at least 3 years.. LoL Zoltrix 11-20-2002, 08:47 PM Lol... Well you COULD build a house with a rather large basement JUST to put your servers in. I mean, anything is possible. Hey, if you can cut costs and still deliver speed and reliability plus great support, would you? Well... Maybe not, I mean. Your hosting your clients on a server located in someone’s house. Gives off a bad business image to me. But for the owner of the basement DC, Im sure it’s a great experience. progex 11-20-2002, 09:39 PM Here's a new idea! Rent-a-dc.com is available. Turn your basement into a DC and start earning income. :D adamcumby 11-20-2002, 11:12 PM I wish i had the money to do it myself. It would be fun to say the least. " I am working getting an alarm system and small generator installed" HAHA everyone, think we can rush in there and grap a few things before he gets his alarm system up :) ? I guess he is getting a gas generator, His wife will hate him the first time the power goes out at 4 am and the generator kicks in. Adam dherman76 11-21-2002, 11:31 AM I wonder how much it cost him? Lippy 11-21-2002, 11:37 AM Very interesting, I actually enjoyed reading it. Kinda like a Techie's wet dream. TowerHost 11-21-2002, 12:08 PM :D That's great! Thanks for sharing it with us. I think my girlfriend would support the datacenter idea - keeps me closer to home. Now I just need to move somewhere that has a backbone next door :D They have a nice little setup that I would love to play with, I think everyone here would! |
