View Full Version : how many computers at your home workstation?
JeremyV 11-18-2002, 11:38 AM Well, my needs have grown over the past year and I had to spend about 450 bucks on a nice new big desk to fit all of my equipment. My main computer is a 900mhz AMD on a 19" trinitron monitor. I use that for most of my design work and the occasional game. Running WinXP.
Then next to me I have my new laptop which is designated as my "work computer", since it handles all of my business related emails, SSH connections, etc. It also has the necessary design tools on it incase I'm away from home and need to make a quick change. Runnding dual boot with Mandrake 9 and WinXP.
Then on the floor I have an old pII 350mhz basically as a server I test things on before putting it into production on my servers. Right now it is running Redhat 7.3, but sometimes I get bored and will switch to FreeBSD, or debian, or whatever else. Since my monitor has two inputs, I just have it plugged into my main monitor and at the push of a button I can switch between the two
So that's about it, I have various random junk computers, but nothing I really use. I know some of you probably have a dozen computers you use at your desk, but I find three works out about perfect. ALthough I would like to get a Mac so I could also test out designs/layouts on various mac setups. But we have macs in the office so I can use them there, but it would still be nice to have it at my desk :)
Darth 11-18-2002, 11:48 AM 3 :)
dherman76 11-18-2002, 11:49 AM used to be 3, now just 1 laptop. i move around too much :)
Sainthax 11-18-2002, 01:08 PM 3 desktops, 2 laptops, and 2 servers for testing
okihost 11-18-2002, 02:06 PM 4 two pc's I use daily, 1 older 266MHZ for server monitoring software and 1 laptop. I looked around for desks for a while and ended up going to Home Depot and getting a nice big corner wedges of countertop in granite for about 200 bucks (after close friends discount) stuck a few file cabinets under it and whamo!. From each corner it sticks out about 6 feet so there is plenty of room for both me and the wife to work...
dherman76 11-18-2002, 02:46 PM sounds impressive okihost- got pics?
sasha 11-18-2002, 02:57 PM Heh, only 2.
One is windows machine used only to test how the sites look on old netscape (I think I will give up on that sometime soon, cant find any mention of netscape in site logs).
The other one is runing SourceMage (I know no one ever heard of it) Linux. Besides some games and Macromedia Flash, I am yet to find something that this machine is not perfect for. It is web server, database server, mail server, video editor, provides Samba mounts for remote windows clients... has over 900 applications installed (daily updated ).
I would enjoy going shopping for new box, but I do not have any good excuse to do so.
dherman76 11-18-2002, 03:01 PM sounds like a awesome computer sasha!
Lippy 11-18-2002, 03:17 PM lets see, 3 desktops, 2 Fileservers(one acts as a backup), those are just my personal computers. 2 desktops, 2 labtops(my father's comps), 1 desktop(mothers) and 3 desktops, older machines used for either parts or when in needs of testing machines.

I plan to add an Apple iBook G3 800 to that in the next couple of days.
When it's all finished I'll have (1) laptop (2) computers and (1) server. 1 computer will be on an 18" Samsung LCD, the other two will be on a KDS vs-7e (jee...wonder where from) or an NEC 18" or 16", and the laptop.
That's all. I'm not a fan of many computers (but that's just me).
