Come on now, not all of you had that little dream when you were 6 years old thinking, "I'm going to be a Web Host when I grow up".. so what really were you intending to do?

I always wanted to be an artist, so that turned out for the better! :)

Greetings:

This is Peter from our team.

From the age of 6 or 7 (age 39 now), I wanted to be involved in programming computers.

My one aunt would always get upset with me because my desire to be involved in programming stayed its course over the years.

She would often rant and rave that a child my age (back then) could not know what they wanted to do; and, that there were people in college who still have to decide what they want to do. How can I, a mere child, know that year in and year out?

There is a difference from a dream of wanting to be involved in a profession, and the reality of the dream.

While over the years I've been in programming in terms of a "title," and developed a hobby of learning different programming languages (ADA, Assembler <various>, ASP, Basic <various including Visual>, C, C++, Clipper, COBOL <no comments>, dBase, JCL <no comment>, Modula II, Pascal, Perl, PHP, Python, and Shell scripting <various>), the past seven and a half years have been involved in various business aspects of the Internet industry.

Today, I'm mainly involved in managerial issues in terms of running the business. However, I’ve never truly left the programming industry as I’m the primary programmer for our enterprise network monitoring system; and, I often help in technical support when there are programming related issues.

Thank you.

Always wanted to be in the computer field didn't much matter what as long as it was computer related. I realized my dream in the summer of 2000 as a PC support specialist. I have since kept learning new things from programing, to netwroking, the webdesign and more. I love this stuff and as the saying goes, a job only seems like a job when it stops being fun, good thing I haven't hit that point yet.

When I was really young I wanted to be a doctor (surgeon), but after doing some early schooling I realized I didn't want to go to school forever. Then I met girls, really hated school :D But during high school I started to get more into computers, so I wanted to be a programmer. But at the same time I picked up a guitar and really liked music, so I wanted to be in a band. Was in a few stupid little bands, but my parents urged me to not get serious about it as it would get me nowhere. Which they were probably right :D

Well, got to college and after one year of all those stupid calculus classes, I switched majors to architecture and landscape architecture. I had some artistic talent so I thought it would work out. 4 years later.. stuck through it and have a degree, yet I don't want to do that for a living and I'm back at my roots in the computer field.

Been doing network and technical support for 4 years, and now I'm hosting  Maybe someday when I get tired of hosting I will actually put my college degree to use, but we will see :D

I wanted to be a professional singer. That came to a halt when I got pregnant with my almost 3 year old son. ;) I was on the road to it though. I was in a very popular local band. I played all over the state of Michigan with the band. I opened for other bigger singers/bands from the state (who have opened for world known singers/bands). I sang on demos for songwriters. And was in the process of making my own solo cd (that's never been finished)...

But I've always been into computers, though. Ever since I could remember, I've been into computers.

And then when I was in high school, that's when the internet really made itself known. I was instantly drawn to it, quickly picking stuff up, and within 6 months time, I was designing websites (not just tacky websites with awful backgrounds! lol). And within a years time, I had my own web design business at 16. And I did fairly well for myself.

But when I was in high school, you had to have lots of $$ in order to make it as a web host. It wasn't even fathomable.

I've been on the internet for almost 9 years now, designing professionally for 8 years... a web host for 2 years.

But I would love to get back into singing and performing on stage. But once you have a family, its hard to get back into that kind of thing. Unless I was really being in the dough with singing, etc... then only would I give up designing/hosting, etc. But until then, I'll stick with this. :)

Hey rockergrrl, what band in michigan if you don't mind answering? A friend of mine is/was in a couple michigan bands, and myself, I even had an offer about a year ago to be a guitarist for Exit to Windsor... but turned it down due to the amount of travel and my current job situations.

A band that's no more anymore (soon went defunct after I had to leave -- creative differences and our bassist decided it wanted to go back to school (even though he was about 26 ;) ).

Out of Saginaw -- Delilah was the name of the band. I was a co-lead singer. The main singer (well before I even joined the band), is a great singer -- she'd make it before I could ever make it in the business. She puts all the female singers that are out now (chick rockers) to shame.

We were going to tryout of Lilith Fair in '99, but there was a family emergency in our drummer's family, so we couldn't make it). But I think we could've easliy made it on the tour though.

But we played all over the state though -- Lansing, Ann Arbor, Detroit, etc. But mostly area gigs though. We had a weekly regular gig at a local bar -- every Thursday night. But we had at least 2 gigs/week. Sometimes more, if requested.

That's awesome. My friend was in Non Solace, which is now defunct as well I believe? I still have a few of their demo tapes, but they played mostly in Flint, occasionally other local venues such as saginaw and lansing, even grand rapids a few times.

I have since lost contact with him, but last I knew he was working for one of the radio stations in Flint and is also in a new band, but not sure which one :) Thanks for sharing!

A paleontologist, archeologist, volcanologist, marine biologist, or oceanographer. And sometimes an astronaut. I still find interest in all of these things.
