Just a quick question that came to me earlier while playing around with WHMCS.
Most 'serious' hosting companies these days will no doubt have domain reseller accounts and therefore offer domain registration services to their customers at the same time as they purchase a hosting package.
With this in mind, I'm curious to hear what percentage of your customers already have domains registered and therefore just need to switch nameservers, and what percentage actually register their domain with you when they buy the hosting package.

What % of your customers already have a domain when they purchase a package?

I'd say around 80% already have it registered, 15% registers it after they get the hosting account, and the other 5% expect us to register it - we do plan on providing domain registration services, but I personally don't believe that you should host your domain with your webhost since I've never done it after reading so many horror stories so it isn't a high priority at the moment.

In our case, just 0.1% clients have the domain before contacting us. Rest ask us to register for them.

Probably about 40% with us.

As a rule, experienced webmasters prefer to keep domains separately from hosting. The point is that it is better to register a domain with reliable companies and have the access to domain account.

Yes I totally agree with this that these two things hosting and domain registrar should be most likely to be keep separates. When its comes in future for changing the host then their you might get in trouble for getting release your domains keys from the previous hosts.

The discussion here is not about buying them at one place or from different providers. Discussion here is about hosts sharing the statistics and the trend with other hosts.

I would say about 50% of our clients already have their domains when they purchase their package. We offer domain registration free though with each package. Some will get an extra domain to park to their existing one to avoid wasting the free domain option :-)

All because you don't do it for whatever reason, doesn't mean you shouldn't give them the option to do so. The majority of customers don't know that you shouldn't host a domain with a web host.

Our local customers almost never have domains when they signup with us. Our national design customers have maybe 50/50 having a domain before signing up with us however our direct signup dedicated server customers always have a domain. I dont think any of them have ever registered a domain through us.

I'd say it's probably around 30% of all shared hosting sign ups also purchase a domain at the same time. Some cases it's a new domain other times it's a domain registration transfer. A lot of web hosting customers believe the domain must be registered with the web host.
