I am thinking about coloing servers instead of renting dedicated. This leaves me with the daunting task of finding good servers to buy without paying IBM type prices.

Can anyone who colocates here tell me where they get their servers?

Also, is it worth it to buy the components and build myself? I have no experience building servers, only desktop systems.

Lastly, if anyone here custom builds servers you can contact me here or by PM and I'll check out your prices and service. Thanks.

Ebay.com, ubid.com, custom pc shops locally

I like gateway's 935c - it's affordable and built well - no problems with them so far :)

The only problem with ebay and those other auction sites is that you wont have a warrenty with them most of the time. I offer a 1 year parts/labor warrenty, which is better than most places. If you would like, I can send you my company's pdf.

I would suggest not building it yourself :) mostly because of the warranty factors - potential problems with the hardware – and the hardware has not been tested to work flawlessly together.

If you get a name brand at least you have a good method of troubleshooting, and a resource of known problems / warehouse of parts to use.

true- and customers like to see a "Powered by Dell" or something like that - branding

I'd like to put "Powered by Dell" on my web site too, since everyone already knows Dell, but if the custom builds are much cheaper, then I probably won't go the HUGE brand name route.

What about systems like Supermicro servers? Any rackmounts (1 or 2U) with a good reputation that aren't as well known to the average Joe?

And about Ebay, I need a warranty. There is no way I will put paying customers on a box I picked up second hand. Brand new warrantied components only.
