View Full Version : Your thoughts of HiveMail?

Hello again,

A quick summary for those who do not know what "HiveMail" is:

HiveMail is a powerful web-based email program that allows you to offer personal email accounts to your site visitors. The powerful combination of the PHP scripting language and the scalable MySQL database makes HiveMail something your visitors would not pass over! (http://www.hivemail.com/features.html)
I have been contemplating on whether or not to purchase this program. I was thinking of using this as a courtesy service for people who need a good free e-mail program with no spam or other garbage.

A chance for people to get a free theirname@adomain.com e-mail address since we all know that popular services such as hotmail.com, yahoo.com, mail.com, and excite.com e-mails for example are all basically taken if you have a common name.

Perhaps I'm just bored, and I need a new venture to pursue, but I would think it would be great to offer this service to people who really need good, easy-to-remember e-mail addresses. Heck, I know a lot of people in my class at technical school could use one.

Anyways, I would just like to hear some feedback from people who have either purchased the service and installed it, or from people who have actually used it (e-mail account) from someone else.

Thank you as always,

im not sure, but i think you can achieve the same thing using a free mail program called squirrelmail, i believe that address is www.squirrelmail.org it is supposedly set up just like yahoo mail.

i do not have it on my domain, as i only have 10 mail accounts and so on... anyhow, if you do try squirrelmail, let me know how it is, because i am looking at buying a reseller account with ulimited mail so i can do the same thing that you offer, only for my colleagues (sp?)

edit// the above link is correct, but it is currently down...
here is the link http://sourceforge.net/projects/squirrelmail/

HiveMail looks pretty good, but as soon as I saw you were talking about webmail I thought of Squirrel . .you should try it before you buy something imho, since it is great.

There are some fundamental differences between HiveMail and Squirrelmail, though.

Squirrelmail's purpose, to my understanding, is to login to your mailbox and check for messages. With HiveMail, the whole idea is to make it easy for your visitors to get their own personal account at your site. HiveMail has a registration routine so users can sign up on their own and their account will be functional immediately, whereas with Squirrel you have to set these accounts up yourself (again, as far as I know. I never looked into it thoroughly).

So if what you're looking for is creating a Hotmail-like service for your site, that's what HiveMail does for you. If you want to give your users a mean to check their own private mailboxes, ala Mail2Web, Squirrelmail is what you want.

(And yes, I know I'm biased - I wrote it. But I'm trying to be as honest as possible. :) If you think I'm wrong then by all means correct me.)

I stand behind HiveMail as well! Its the best webmail script I have come across ever online. And I've tried them all!

I've seen/test HiveMail throughout its development, and I can absolutely say, "I'm in love!" :)

Its easy to use, and very customizable!

A+++ goes to Chen and HiveMail!
