I was just checking my email and there was one regarding the selling of one of my domains. I didn't think much of it, but then noticed that the email was sent to mydomain.com@protecteddomainservices.com. It is the first such email I have had of the kind. Is it normal?

Whois protection service will forward any email sent to yourdomain.com@protecteddomainservices.com to the address you registered with them. So it is normal.

The email is the same no matter what registrar your domain is from?

Anon - my understanding that your mydomain.com is not with name.com and/or does not have private WHOIS enabled?

It's probably the start of a whole new way to spam. The majority of private whois services bounce email or just /dev/null em.

The whole private whois concept doesn't make any sense. Get a pobox, setup a /dev/null mailbox and be done with it, ICANN doesn't require a response to emails, they just can't bounce. However even when they do bounce ICANN usually does nothing.

The private WHOIS service protects your identity. When someone checks the WHOIS for your domain in search of a way to contact you, they can still email the email on the WHOIS to contact you. It will forward it to you, without your identity being revealed to the sender - it is still protecting your identity.

The fact that you have not received anything like this previously is simply because no one has gone on your WHOIS and sent a message to the email listed. It's nothing to worry about, and should be expected. If it's not an email you're interested in, ignore it.

Ahh okay, thanks. That makes sense.

The person that sent it said, as my domain was redirected, was I interested in selling. At first I thought I must have forgotten to renew it, so I checked and it didn't redirect anywhere  I had hit reply to tell him the domain was right where it should be and what was he offering, when I noticed the email addy he had contacted me at. Kinda scared me a bit :P
