I'm looking at a domain name that wasn't renewed by the owner and is still in the redemption period. If it doesn't get renewed, how can I get it?

This is from whois
Domain Name: THE-NAME-I-WANT.COM
Registrar: IN2NET NETWORK, INC.
Whois Server: whois.in2net.com
Referral URL: http://www.in2net.com
Name Server: DNS3.DOTEASY.COM
Name Server: DNS4.DOTEASY.COM
Status: redemptionPeriod
Updated Date: 02-oct-2009
Creation Date: 22-aug-2004
Expiration Date: 22-aug-2009

This is NOT a valuable domain, it was a site put up by a doctor who wanted to share knowledge about a rare disease. The name is not common, or catchy, or cute, or anything like that. The doc has since passed away, and a grandson was maintaining the site, but he didn't renew. I have tried to contact him, but don't know if he will bother.

If he doesn't renew it, I want to get it and republish the doctors info, for educational purposes, not commercial.

You might say that since it's not a valuable domain, I could just wait. But I did that with a similar site, and snatchers took it and wanted $550.00 for it. :(

So this time, I'd like to get the domain name and avoid the anger at being asked for ransom for a domain used for non profit educational purposes.

Only the holder of a domain name can renew it when it is in the life cycle of a domain name. Unless you get hold of the current holder, your only change is using a back order company. Or wait after the 75th day of the registration and see if nobody re - registered it that day and get it. I wouldn't list the domain i want in here though :)

U can connect him to ask him to renew the domain(the redemption is high).Or u need to wait until the the drop time coming. In this way,I recommend u to backorder the domain in all 3 big companies(Snapnames,Namejet and Pool). So u don't need to take chance to lose it.If the domain is invalueable,in most cases u will pay for the minim bid to obtain the domain.Much appreciated for what u do!

Chances are very poor he can do that.
The doc has since passed away
He appears to have died. ;)

The site author died, the grandson is the webmaster.

Yeah,the redemption price is expensive(in Dynadot it's $69.25).But compared to backorder's bid,it is acceptable.:)

If it's not a valuable domain, you might want to wait until it drops and re-register it. If it's a "must have" domain, then backorder it at SnapNames/NameJet/Pool

Godaddy backorder worked for me three times, it costs $20.
