View Full Version : Avoid access to a subfolder
How can I avoid public access to any subfolder?
I mean, if under my index.html I have subfold1, I would like that anybody going to www.mydomain.com/subfold1/ instead of watching my tree folders was having some blank page, error message or so.
Thank you!
I believe what you are asking is how to password protect a directory?
Vito
Thank you, Vito.
I mean I don't want that my folders are seen as in this example...
I would like that when somebody typed that address a blank page or so was shown.
Thanks again for your time and help.
JeremyV 11-17-2002, 02:10 PM you could put a blank html file in the folder. It would then just show a white page
Well, one solution is to password protect the entire directory so that someone has to enter a username and password to access any files in the directory.
Another option is to simply place an index.html page into the folder so that when someone enters the URL of the folder in their address bar, it defaults to the index page. I made an example here for you in one of my sites:
http://www.demodemo.com/custom_jobs/
However, I notice that within your folder, you have other folders. So someone could still point to http://www.ampervolt.com/folder1-1/folder2-1/ and get a directory tree. So just put an index page in each of the directories.
There's alot of wisdom here at WHT, so someone else may have other solutions for you.
Hope that helps.
Vito
Thank you Vito and JeremyV.
I appreciate very much your help. The idea of one index file in each folder is simple... and simple things are great!!
Thanks again for your time and to Vito for your page example.

Well, now you've done it. Suddenly I'm very thirsty for a Heineken...
Vito
Vito, I really would like to drink the Heineken with you...
I would then discuss about your extremely interesting page www.demodemo.com.
This is just what I can use in some way!
We (my wife and myself) a running a small web reseller company and your CPanel tutorials look just great.
I will have a longer look to your site and will keep incontact with you.
And let me invite you to this Heineken beer.

Thanks for the kind words. Let me know if/when you have any questions.
And regarding that beer, I promise you'll be the first person I'll call the next time I'm in Barcelona... ;) May not be for a while though - the last time I was in Spain was 1974 on a school trip. Suddenly I feel very old...
Vito
mmmm.....
On 1974 I already was 25 years old...
Will be a pleasure to meet you in Barcelona (I own you a beer and hope you will not take long to come because due to interest rates I will have to invite to thousand beers if you delay your visit).
Well.... why not.... another beer !! hip.. hip.. hip..

Yup, Spain is a beautiful country. I have nothing but good memories about the trip. Plus one strange incident. In Madrid, I tried taking a picture of a police officer on a motorcyle, and he promptly stopped and took the film from my camera. Something about not being allowed to "record" the authorities in any way. Funny, though. After about a 20 minute conversation, he softened up and let me take a photo when nobody was looking... :D

JeremyV 11-17-2002, 03:11 PM Yes, a very beautiful country indeed! And such friendly people as well. I started to really enjoy tapas as well. Especially getting to know some of the local bartenders.. one of the only spanish phrases I remember "Uno mas!" haha.. I think many times I had one too many :D
A few photos from spain:

Thank you for your nice words.
On 1974 the political situation of Spain was really difficult. That could be, Vito, the reason of this strange action of the police man.
And thank you, JeremyV, for the fotos... One of them belongs to the "Patio de los Arrayanes" in Alhambra of Granada (southern Spain). Do you remember the "Patio de Los Leones" (yard of the lions). I have been teher in winter and really is a relaxing place. I was sitting in those strange chairs close to the lions reading a book... mmmmm....
Well, Barcelona is not the same quiet but... still acceptable.
Please do not forget to write me if you have a possibility to come.
