I've used SmartFTP and FileZilla. FileZilla is free.

If you're transferring large files you can realize the transfer speed but if you are transferring lost of small files you won't because FTP makes and breaks connections for each individual file transfer.

1,000mb in 2500 files will take a *lot* longer to transfer than 1,000mb in 2 files even if you and your server were connected together via a gigabit link :)

I use FileZilla and love it. It is free and updates frequently. I highly recommend it.

I did not realize this until you mentioned it.

Your right, I downloaded the update for WHMCS and it was averaging 40kbs. Big files download around 1000mbs.

By the way I use both WinSCP and Coffeecup FTP clients. Coffeecup won't do SFTP even though it says it will and WinSCP requires me to drag and drop from my Windows Explorer.

I would really like to have one program that will do SFTP, FTP and Edit Files so I don't have to keep changing programs.

FileZilla will work just fine for you.

didn't we just have a thread just like this? everyone said filezilla for windows, gnome-ftp for linux and some other thing for macosx.

don't forget if you're using encryption, and you should be, it will leave quite an overhead - plain ftp is one of the fastest of all transfer protocols, adding ssl/ssh will slow it down, also try turning on compression, or tar'ing up lots of small files into one big one, which will also be faster to write to your local disk.

I recommend FileZilla, as you can use several connection to the same server, if you have 1000+ files to upload it will speed up process.

another vote for filezilla - I've used cuteftp before but it never stuck with me.

I also used to use another one...forgot the name - also started with a 'C' - it was really good and it was installed on my old old computer.

Anytime I need to upload files I always zip or rar them up and uncompress them in the websites control panel. Its a faster upload that way. 1 connection only.

But I have been using filezilla a little bit and flashfxp. They both seem really good to have.

WinSCP as it not only does FTP but SFTP, FTPS and SCP. One client to rule them all :)

My preference is CuteFTP Pro. I've been using the software for probably more than a decade now and have always been happy with it.

If you're transferring large files you can realize the transfer speed but if you are transferring lost of small files you won't because FTP makes and breaks connections for each individual file transfer.

Mike is spot on with this. If you're transferring a huge number of files it will go a lot faster if you zip the files together into a single file then unzip once on the server.

I do definitely hear your complaint there. :/ I had a similar issue with them (IPSwitch).

We use CuteFTP Pro and here comes why:

IPswitch corrupted some files some years ago which caused us lots of trouble. SmartFTP doesnt have all the protocols we need.

We where looking something that can handle FTP, SFTP and SSH connections, it should be fast and it should have a feature to encrypt logins. CuteFTP was the only one that had all this features, at least when researched FTP software it was the only one that had all this features, specially the SiteManager can be password protected.

I cannot imagine to store the logins for servers/account in a FTP software or any other software at all, specially if its hacked or if someone gains access to it. Lost laptops, etc. So one of the main reasons was that it could ciphers the logins in a master file.

So we have the full sitemanager password protected and you have to enter a master password each time you open the software. That besides regularly rotate logins.

CuteFTP is fast, very easy, it detects all files in automatic mode, even server files, not all, for example some config files in Linux you have to manually choose if its ascii or binary but its the one that makes the best job of at least 10 softwares we tried and it supports all transfer protocols. It also have a nice file viewer for fast file editing and it has a site to site transfer. Overall we LOVE CuteFTP Pro. Never had a single issue with it. Donīt let the name fool you. More then cute its robust.

Its worth every penny !!!

I use FireFTP and it's fine. But is the server itself and your network connection that can undermine the capabilities of the fastest FTP client. I used to use Cute FTP Pro which is great. But I find my local mem footprint is better with FireFTP.

I agree, FlashFXP rules. Also it allows for server side "send-requests" out of the box if your server allows for it which all the other programs dont/didnt.

FlashFXP was made in the time of the FXP boards when it was awesome to just send files from one server to the other by means of simple requesting. Your didnt need a fast connection to move files from one place to another.

Call me simple, I'm used to it

But in windows, aside from the fact I almost never ftp from windows, when I do I use windows explorer

In linux I use whatever happens to be the file manager for the desktop I'm using, usually dolphin or konqueror in kde

Nowhere near as cool as all those ftp clients, but it works for me and it's great for editing files, I generally ftp in, double-click on a file and it usually opens in the same program as it would if it was a local file.

To put the newly edited file on the server? I just click the lil x in the top right-hand corner and let it save the changes when it asks

Dead simple, just like me

FileZilla is the best I've seen. It's quite fast and also has many useful features.

Ecky
04-23-2011, 06:55 AM
In all honesty it's highly unlikely any one ftp client will be faster than any other client

Two computers (e.g yours and a server) can only communicate as quickly as whichever of the two machines has the slowest connection and any client, ftp or otherwise is limited to the speed the two machines can communicate with each other

No ftp client can magically speed up that communication, or increase the maximum filesize that can be sent before a timeout occurs, though sometimes the ftp server software can be tweaked to allow transfer of larger files

So while it's nice to get feedback on what other people use, don't expect any really noticeable gains in transfer speeds etc between any one client and any other

People often state that what they use is the 'best' or the 'fastest', but they're kidding themselves, we all like to think that whatever we use is the greatest thing since sliced bread but in reality we just mean it's what suits us best
