Are you looking for a 3rd party processor/merchant, or looking to get your own merchant account with a processor like authorize.net?

Depends on the volume of sales you process per month really. For a merchant account, the cheapest you can usually find from a reputable place is about a $29 monthly fee (for authorize.net usage), usually a one-time setup fee, but a low processing rate of usually 2.x% as opposed to 5.x% with a higher processing charge.

So if you only process 5 sales per month equating to around $100 in total charges, you would be better off with a 3rd party processor as you don't pay the monthly fee, and the higher % won't be that bad.

But say you process 30 or 40 orders per month. That higher % can start to add up, and you may end up spending more than $29 in 3rd party merchant fees.

So look at what kind of sales you are doing now, and your projected short-term growth. That will help you decide on your decision :)

Depending upon your volume, 2.9% + $.30 is not that bad of a rate. Most merchant accounts will charge a percentage (usually 2-3%) plus a transaction fee PLUS a monthly fee (usually ~$15).

PayPal isn't a bad solution if you are doing small volume, it is just much more professional to have your own account.
