View Full Version : BEWARE: rackshack
hekate 11-14-2002, 04:35 PM I got a rackshack server the other week and can so far say that I definitely wouldnt recommend them,
first off within 1 minute of ordering my server had a hardware fault straight away and it took 12 hours to fix,
I decided to request some more IPs for the server after being told by RS that you get 7 free ones, but they started to bill me for mine :D
I had some recent bind problems aswell and tried to get help from RS but I was told that they couldnt help me because I had updated my version (due to security flaws), so I reinstalled the old version and asked them again for help, but this time they came back and said they dont support bind at all
this wouldnt have bothered me if they hadnt originally said that the reason why they couldnt help me was because I had a different version,
I realise that other people have had good experience with them, I just wouldnt recommend them
goodness0001 11-14-2002, 04:38 PM They have too many customers
hpeters998 11-14-2002, 04:54 PM Hey,
I've had a trouble start, wasted 100$ on 2 restores for problems caused by a faulty image they put on my box (I know now). I already sent an email to their customer support for a refund of the restorefees I payed, but it seems they ignored this.
I'm still havin some questions about their bandwith monitoring. According to them I almost used 3gb in 5 days on telnetting, which i think is impossible. installed MRTG to monitor this and I'm checking this daily.
@ the moment my box is running fine, all my troubletickets are solved, most of them in a reasonable time. I noticed TT related with DNS take a bit longer, but I read they are working on this to automate it.
This is my experience with RS till now.

If you dont like support @ RS, then go to rackspace, they will take care of all your problems, they have some very good admins..ahm yes they dont have any plans for 99$/month and they dont offer 400 GB.

hekate 11-14-2002, 05:06 PM there are a lot of other providers around actually which offer similar packages to RS, i just didnt know at the time :P
Samuel 11-14-2002, 05:07 PM Angel, do you use their services?

I reviewed the account and I note that the hardware issue was resolved in under 6 hours from when you reported the issues, the time was taken to investigate the issue, and it was determined to be a bad hard drive ( I/O errors ) and I had a CSR look into the IPs and all IPs on your account are listed as 'Free'.
Angel78 11-14-2002, 05:12 PM RS = yes
Rackspace = not yet, will test them soon, but 100's WHT users cant be wrong or can?
Samuel 11-14-2002, 05:20 PM Read the rules Angle, you're spamming the forum
hekate 11-14-2002, 05:23 PM In my RS control panel I see the following for IPs:
0354805-2 Additional IP Addresses (4) - - Active 10/12/02 -
0354805-3 Additional IP Monthly Fee (1) - - Active 10/12/02 -
I have requested 7 additional IPs which are supposed to be free and theres 5 there,
the first month I was billed $105.53 and the second $106.61
the first month should have been slightly higher due to the $1 setup fee, so I must be paying for something extra,
maybe you have a different definition of what free IPs are, im not sure, theres gotta be something wrong somewhere anyway with only 5 IPs coming up for 7 requested,
I think its nice that they make the effort to contact you through the board after noticing your post, its just a shame how they dont seem to take much notice when asking for help in private

Patrick-EV1 11-14-2002, 05:29 PM You may want to call Customer Service and have them explain the billing, if you were being charged for your IPs, it would be a lot higher, as our charges include a 25$ set up fee plus 1$ per IP. I dont see any contact on your account regarding this issue at all, so I'm not sure how we can assist you with a problem you have not contacted us about.
hekate 11-14-2002, 05:35 PM you have a livechat system on your site,
I attempted to use that to gain support,
and if Im not being billed for IPs, what are the extra charges for?
that money must have been added somewhere
Angel78 11-14-2002, 05:35 PM ahm ok i personally know ppl using them, but it wont count right? Ok i Was wrong :bawling:
Angel78 11-14-2002, 05:37 PM $105.53 isnt this 99$ plus that Tax Sale? i mean i have same numbers @my account
headsurfer 11-14-2002, 05:43 PM Our system allows each customer to log into our members area and control their account. When accessing your account, you will see a complete break down of the charges in your account. You will also see that a 100% discount is applied to the "Additional IP" charges there. You will also see a breakdown of the taxes charged. In Texas, we are required to collect 8.25% total sales taxes on 80% of the charges.
The breakdown was also listed on the screen when you were signing up with a detail of all charges when you signed up. You had to "click" to agree with those charges and fees.
There is nothing hidden here. All of the detail and information on your billing is available to you online without even having to talk to anyone.
aah-jim 11-14-2002, 05:44 PM the tax calculation explains it

If you look at the dates on the bills you will see that the $106.61 was for the initial setup and the first monthly charge. The $105.53 is for the recurring monthly fee. As the HeadSurfer posted " No Hidden Fees ". Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
Thank you,

hekate 11-14-2002, 05:53 PM thanks for clearing up the billing questions,
it was just a bit confusing because I see those 5 IPs in my subscribed services page, maybe it could be changed to avoid confusion please?
headsurfer 11-14-2002, 05:55 PM is hekate the same person as jimcarter ???
Choppy 11-14-2002, 05:57 PM Angel78,
Its a good idea to get some experience with a company before you really comment on them.
For example them 100 plus users that are using rackspace could be experienced in higher levels than your average linux person. So they would be able to trouble shoot most of there own problems.
Its is a big price difference to move from RS to rackspace and i believe in my own opinion that its also a change of quality of serivce and equipment.
edit: NO OFFENSE HeadSurfer - You got a great thing going
mushrew 11-14-2002, 11:21 PM Headsurfer: In response to your october 30th e-mail update calling for customers with 5+ servers to e-mail you for special updates, I notified you via e-mail with the information you requested, yet never got a response back. Were you unable to reply to each person individually or did my e-mail get lost in cyberspace?
headsurfer 11-15-2002, 12:02 AM I have not yet replied to ANY of them. It's in the works.
