View Full Version : question regarding private domains
PixelOptik 11-14-2002, 11:48 AM I had a quick question regarding GoDaddy's "private" domains. Does this mean that instead of all my contact info (name, address, number, etc) it will show up as:
Registrant:
Some Name
Registered through: Go Daddy Software
(http://www.godaddy.com)
Domain Name: MYDOMAIN.COM
Domain servers in listed order:
NS1.SOMEHOST.COM
NS2.SOMEHOST.COM
So, instead of $8.95/yr choosing the private domain would cost an extra $10, making it $18.95/yr vs. regular domains?
Also, besides godaddy, is there any other registrar that offers the "private" domains? Thank you for your time :)
UH-Matt 11-14-2002, 11:53 AM surely you could just use false info except the email address :)
PixelOptik 11-14-2002, 11:56 AM well, I thought that was "illegal" ;) I mean, wouldn't I be breaking some kind of rules, law, etc? and of course, I always use my real email.
UH-Matt 11-14-2002, 11:57 AM I have some domains i own which arent in my address, you could just say you forgot to keep the whois upto date :)
Did i just say that out loud - opps :)
PixelOptik 11-14-2002, 12:02 PM hehehe, okie dokie :D i'll just say UH-Matt told me it was ok to do it so they'll leave me alone lol j/k :stickout:
Gordo 11-14-2002, 12:18 PM Leaving out or putting in false info is probably a violation of some regulation, but nothing's likely to come of it.
More important, IMO, is to brush after every meal, never wear white after Labor Day and always use the 9-digit zip code on your snail mail.
PixelOptik 11-14-2002, 12:52 PM lol @ Gordo's opinion :) well, I do have my correct information up so I dont think I'll bother changing anything. I was just curious about the "private" domains godaddy was offering and if it's even worth it. Plus, I was wondering if there was any other registrar that offered the "private" domains.
UH-Matt 11-14-2002, 01:18 PM i reckon half the domains in the world have out of date / false info. Some of the names and addreses ive seen in whois reports are a joke. :)
PixelOptik 11-14-2002, 06:18 PM hmmm, what does that type of envelope mean next to this thread??
PixelOptik 11-14-2002, 06:21 PM lol nevermind! I just realized it next to each one of my threads! (homer simpson *dooh*):D

I use it and love it!
Less spam and junk mail.
I own income properties in three States.
To me it is a very good service and helps me to protect myself.
Ever have another person become you and rack up some bills?
Lawyer fees where over $10,000, had the police knocking on my door and it took me over 2 years to become me again!
The "who is" data base is a great place that is wide open to all to harvest information on people. Your trash is another good place.
My problem started with a carbon slip at a gas station.
Anything that I can to do to protect myself, is worth the money...........
Dotster offers something similar. To me it seems like a ripoff ($10) as the whois is mostly made up of fake info anyway.

If you register a domain and use sdgdgdfg@hotmail.com as the contact address what's to stop someone who is less than scrupulous from registering that hotmail account at hotmail and hijacking that domain?
To get an idea of how this works, check out George Kirikos excellent article on this process:

if you decide to make up information, you should be at least smart enough to use a valid email address.
there may be value in this new service from godaddy, but i am yet to be convinced.
PixelOptik 11-18-2002, 04:20 AM well, I heard that even using the "private domain" you can still do a "whois" search on godaddy and still find out all the registration info. So then wouldn't the $10 extra fee be worthless? Dont get me wrong, if it is indeed a private domain I wouldn't mind paying those extra $10, but if my info still shows up why should I bother.
CareBear 11-18-2002, 06:57 AM I have a private registration for one of my domains with godaddy.
The info from whois.godaddy.com gives me:
(I don't have blah.com, just didn't feel like leaving the domain name on here :))

You can go read up the terms of the contract at www.domainsbyproxy.com
The downsides I see would be that technically, you don't own the domain but they do. They'll open any snail mail sent to your domain and let you know through a mail if something is sent, by whom, concerning what etc (there's a price for forwarding postal mail) or that they reserve the right to cancel your account and put your real contact address back on the whois.
