View Full Version : Users Advice Please.. a Trusted Host?
VidER 11-14-2002, 11:02 AM Hello Everybody..
I have just recovered from a Hosting Fraud with HostPacket.net as you can read Here. (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=87230) .
And I really became afraid now! I need a host. a good host but a well trusted one! I don't want to go to the Requests forum because I honestly can't trust them anymore!
Can you please advice me to use a certain host that can provide me with all my needs in a good price, good performance and good support?
I need a shared host (Not Dedicated) with around 300 MBs and all the bells and whistles. CGI, PHP, Mailing Lists, Good Bandwidth, Unlimited POP3 accounts, .. etc.
I was thinking about http://www.edgehost.com .. is it good? have you tried them? Do you suggest anybody else?
Please provide the URLs and talk about your experience with any host you mention.
Thanks everybody and please remember that I need the users opinions not the hosts!

GandalfDDUK 11-14-2002, 11:14 AM use the search feature at the top of the forum, you will see that edgehost has had a lot of negative feedback lately. As others will no doubt point out you do get what you pay for, there are a few exceptions but not many, the more reputable ones around here seem to be httpme.com (AussieBob), splashost.com there are others which others will no doubt add but also check out kualo.com (personal experience)
okihost 11-14-2002, 11:18 AM You might even go as far as asking a host if they will host you for the first 30 days with no billing then if you decide to stay you will pay both for the first 30 days and sign up.
carrotweb 11-14-2002, 11:31 AM Here are good hosts I have used personally. Prices and features differ, so you will want to do some investigation to decide if they will serve your needs or not, but I'm reasonably sure these guys will be around this time next year.
focalhosting.com
dixiesys.com
prioritycolocation.com (reseller's account)
splashhost.com (reseller's account)
phpcoder 11-14-2002, 03:36 PM :) HostPacket ;)
Know what you mean. Am currently using superb internet for my employers 6 sites (1 account) and Hostingmatters for 3 other accounts (and plan to move 2 others there).
Have been with both about a year and have had no problems that haven't been quickly resolved. This past year is the longest period I've had in 6+ years of web design without a webhost problem (either technical or accounting). :D
Finally it seems my host nightmares are over.
(Knocking on wood)
Renegade 11-14-2002, 05:03 PM Hello, As a previous user of Hostpacket I understand your pain. Then it was MEhosting and that proved to be better but the support was lacking. My searching WHT turned up a host with what seemed at the time to be to good to be true, I couldn't find a bad thing anywhere. Checking out there own forum was the same, folks there were more than positive. They have Live chat on there site and I took advantage of it and got a lot of ?'s answered. Well 2 months have passed and I'm over joyed, Support is better than I could have imagined, Don't want to jinx myself, running 100% UT too . So if I was you I would stop by

pop the live chat and tell Danny what your looking for, I'm sure you won't be disapointed. Good luck in your quest Renegade :)
beachtrader 11-14-2002, 05:11 PM I agree Okihost--try to find out if your new host will provide some sort of guarantee for about a month. This way you will know how the service is going to be. Also, remember if you end up trying to select a host solely on price you will only get what you pay for.
I'm using Edgehost, and I think you should give it a try.
...you will see that edgehost has had a lot of negative feedback lately.
The keyword here is "lately". It's just a phase, I'm sure they will overcome the network problems and return to their reputable self again. It's not bad as some people said, you just have try it out for yourself instead of listening to a few individuals.
Gordo 11-15-2002, 12:02 PM My suggested method is elimination. Get a list of suspects that offer what you want, investigage each with particular emphasis on the recent preformance and eliminate the bad ones.
Who you have left are the prospects. It hardly matters what method you use after that, one method is about as good(or bad) as another.
As you see my view is that a good host can turn bad, so it's something you have to accept right off. It's natural to want future predictions based upon the past to be highly accurate, but that's not how things work.

It's a shame that it is coming to this now.
My tip: ask lots of questions of your potential host and get in to their forums if you can and see what other actual users are experiencing.
Good luck in your search.

Hmmm.
Well I've just left them. I couldn't take the down time. I was patiant, hung around but last week did it for me.
Down for hours one day then the site eventually returned. Next day I thought I would just check again and of course... down it was again.
If this was isolated I would have hung in there. But it wasn't. Sorting their network problems is not my problem, it's theirs. If the first test of a host is availability they failed badly. Exit me.
If I was to assess them I would say that they have one good guy who deserves better. Alec, the support bod, seems to work his butt off for them. He knows his stuff and tries to look after everyone. He's been fighting a losing battle and frankly I suspect he deserves to work for a more reliable firm.
The problem is that there is obviously something fundamentally worng: network? EdgeHost itself? Who knows... does it really matter? What matters to me is that they failed to deliver.
I've no axe to grind. They're just a host and they let me down, so I move out and move on, wiser for the experience. However, if you want to benefit from that experience I would look elsewhere for a host, or you may pay the price whilst they "overcome the network problems ".
trparky 11-16-2002, 01:37 PM May I suggest my host ( RochenHost (http://www.rochenhost.com) )?
What can I say, they are excellent. Very good uptime if I do say so myself.
I trust them, in fact, I am on very good terms with the CEO of the host.
Note, this host is definitely not owned by Timmy and the like. This guy knows what he is doing. He strives everyday to make sure everyone is satisfied.
I am not employee of RochenHost, just a customer.
If you have a question, feel free to drop by the Pre-Sales Questions Forum (http://forums.rochen.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&forumid=2) and also read the Customer Testimonials Forum (http://forums.rochen.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&forumid=7).

Thanks for the recommendation, Tom :)
Informity 11-17-2002, 01:01 PM I'm hosted by HostParticle for about 3 months and it's all good so far. Only downtime has been due to some individual thinking it's fun to attack the servers. Support is usually answered within minutes over IM software... haven't needed to use a ticket yet.

F**Newbie 11-18-2002, 03:00 AM Don't TRUST Hostpacket !!
They still did not repay the persons that they promised when they had a failure for more than a week !!
Hostpacket was good till he had problems, then the true face of him came out.
So, only if you want to loose clients, go with Hostpacket !!
