Thank you mooseweb 09-01-2009, 09:13 PM That honestly depends, what's your budget, what's your business plan? There are SO many factors involved before making that decision. I went with a reseller plan at first, and my business sparked so I upgraded to a dedicated. I regret making that decision so soon, as I could of saved myself about $400.00 in the long run. dbbrock1 09-01-2009, 09:25 PM As the above guy said, maybe a reseller will be good for you. I also made a mistake and actually bought a machine off ebay. I shipped it off to colo for something like $150/m. Needless to say, I switched to a reseller plan because it took me awhile to even use a few gigs of space and bandwidth. No sense in paying $150/m when you can do the same thing for under $20/m. Unless of course you want to offer reseller plans and VPS plans as part of your service - then you will need that dedicated server. mooseweb 09-01-2009, 09:30 PM Ouch, buying a machine and co-locating, well at least you can take the next step when that time occurred. I'll probably start co-locating in December =) dbbrock1 09-01-2009, 10:03 PM Ouch, buying a machine and co-locating, well at least you can take the next step when that time occurred. I'll probably start co-locating in December =) Hah - yeah definitely not something I could recommend doing for a newbie host. That was long before I knew about WHT or dedicated servers for that matter. I was just under the impression that I needed a server to start a hosting company... I am not really a big fan of colo...I know a lot of people are, but to me it's just too much of a hassle and worry. Atleast with a dedicated server I know that if a hard drive fails, they got about 100 other hard drives waiting on stand by for replacement. If your hard drive fails while on Colo, you are basically F'ed unless you want to pay some ridiculous fee to have one of their hard drives installed. Hydro_Host 09-02-2009, 06:06 AM I think if you are just starting out go with a VPS and then work your way up. You can get some pretty cheap deals on VPSs. The only thing is with a VPS is you cant offer other VPSs as your service! Look at your budget; make sure you have a business plan. How quickly do you expect your business to grow? I can say it probably won't grow as fast as you expect! tjohnson3757 09-02-2009, 08:41 AM While starting smaller might be sometimes better, you also need to make sure you have the tools to do the job. I would start with dedicated servers. Ryan-W 09-02-2009, 01:17 PM Since you are just getting into web hosting business, a VPS or even a reseller account should be good enough to get started. Get enough clients first, and recurring income to invest in a dedicated server later as your business grows. KualoJo 09-02-2009, 01:28 PM Nothing wrong with a GOOD VPS to get started. Just don't get a dirt cheap one. Overall VPS allows you to scale without complicated migrations, which is good for your budget as you grow. Make sure your host can scale to a decent amount of RAM/CPU/Disk on the same platform (for comfort I'd want to know I can scale to at least 4GB RAM). If your business tails off or you lose a big customer, you can just scale down - you're not lumbered with a fixed hosting fee regardless of your usage. I would also make sure that resources are guaranteed for you and nobody else - I'm not a fan of VPS where CPU and RAM is "burstable", i.e. when the core node is quieter you can use more, but when it's quieter you get throttled to your minimum. It's allows for inconsistencies, and could result in you having periods of good service, and periods of poorer service. If that poor service period is only 10% of the day you may decide to go with it, and that'll irk your customers if it causes problems. I'd rather pay for what I'm getting and know I'm getting just that 100% of the time. Also consider VPS on the cloud; you've then got a better platform than dedicated as you'll have hardware redundancy too. But I think a reseller plan is also a nice way to save money and test the depth of water and with cpanel/whm and most panels its easy to move eventually but always easier to get happy start first. Why pay for something you dont need? jpatton 09-11-2009, 12:31 PM If you are just testing the waters and starting out why not go with a reseller, don't have to worry about having someone manage the VPS or dedi, or having to take the time to do it yourself. And a lot of resellers throw in value added things such as billing managers etc. Plus if your using cPanel its easy enough to migrate clients from your reseller account up to a VPS or dedi once you have reached the client base to support it. John Hydro_Host 09-12-2009, 07:03 AM I think you should start off small with a VPS or even a reseller account first. Then work you way up to dedicated. Make sure you have enough regular income before you jump up to dedicated. Depends what services you want to offer. |
