I'm getting a steady 45k/sec from our datacenter. We are near Albany, NY.

~6.1KB/s from the Bay Area, California.

The latency is pretty bad from where I am. It looks like things start getting choppy at cn.net. I have attached a traceroute below for your convenience:

China connections always this bad?

sigma

900 ms ping, 12.24 kiloBYTES/sec.

The OC-3c to Global Crossing seems to make a difference on this one, but yes, connectivity to China is often this bad.

Maybe there's a satellite hop in there.

Could it be the Great Firewall Of China that could be causing this? I have read a bit about it. Would a firewall add this much latency?

no, China's internet is the same as U.S, only lots more firewalls, and limits, there's only one limit I'm not against --- NO PORN:D
