View Full Version : Linux web hosting with root access
JamieD 11-13-2002, 05:47 AM Hi all,
I am looking at web hosting that allows full root access to the server but is not a dedicated server. I have found a couple of these types but I am looking for more alternatives.
These hosting packages are usually called Virtual Servers where one box is split up into serveral operating systems that are independant of eachother.
I would like the server to come pre installed with all the usual php, mysql, web based admin etc... I dont want to have to pay any more for things like adding domain names or mail boxes this must be included in the price, if there is a limit of 200 domains or so then thats fine.
I already know of DSVR.co.uk who offer this but space and bandwidth is very limited for the price. I also know of annother but I have forgotten the name.
Thanks in advance
JamieD
chrisblack 11-13-2002, 06:13 AM Hi Jamie,
I'm not sure whether DSVR offer full root access. I have one of their VS300 packages and they provide an 'admin' user, I can no most things, but not everything.
They are pretty expensive for the amount of space and bandwidth but they have been very reliable and their support is always prompt. I've used them for the last 14 months.

rk_usct 11-13-2002, 10:41 AM hi
:) dont you think it is too risky for them to provide the root access?? imaging that , every user have the privilege to modify the php setting, dns , mysql... I dont think any hosting will provide this kind of service.
but, good luck,though.

Actually yes they do - it's called virtual dedicated. Look around - there's more than a few hosts that offer it now. We've thought about it ourselves recently.

Not in a true VDS system. The rm -fr would only take down the operating system of that specific VDS, not the others hosted on the same box. Each VDS has it's own instance of all services running separate and each root user can only delete files within their own VDS.
Darth 11-13-2002, 04:44 PM Terrastudios (WHT nick) was offering virtual dedicated servers if thats any help..
Check out OnSmart.net and FluidHosting.com, they both offer virtual private servers, just what you are looking for ;)
Luxore 11-14-2002, 02:58 AM I don't think Virtual Private Servers is the way to go.
Either your virtual, or your dedicated, I don't believe in an inbetween.
Jamie, if you're looking for root access because you like to run your own show type you might consider building your server and colocating it somewhere (colocation services are easy to find).
You can install RedHat and one of the popular control panels on a machine very easily.

babblefish 11-16-2002, 09:11 PM http://www.uk-virtual-servers.net/ offer what you are after using a redhat based system
My hosting provider offers freeBSD systems they are in testing meaning they are offering them for free atm for testing
http://www.carpediem-it.com
I have tried both and been happy with both, the freeBSD one is nice with the ports

I thought they stopped those a while back. At least Matt told me they did...
