View Full Version : Reseller Server Bandwidth Usage
Aushosts 11-12-2002, 05:40 AM Hello Everyone,
I am planning to lease a server in Feb and I am looking at my options. I wish to offer reseller only hosting on this new server therefore I would like to know how much bandwidth I would need. I am thinking 100GB but I am not sure how much more the Resellers clients would use.
Any hosts out there who would like to tell me how much your reseller server puts out would be great.
Thanks again.
Regards
Brenden
clockwork 11-12-2002, 06:18 AM Why try to compare with other hosts?
It all depends on how many reseller accounts you put on a server, and how much, if any, you allow them to oversell.
It's simple math really.
No offense, but it sounds like you really haven't thought this out much, but it looks like you have plenty of time from now until Feb.

Why not? I want something to work with if host X has 20 Resellers and they use say 300GB, then I may be out quite a lot with 100GB. I want to research this well, I dont want to be another failed host like Deahost, and many others... See Here (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=86367&goto=newpost)

I will allow them to oversell both bw, and space. I am planing on having MAX 30 resellers per server.

Humm... I don't think so I have been putting a plan together now for about 3 months. I am currently reselling and want own server by Feb, which is better then getting it now and going broke in 5 months.
Darth 11-12-2002, 06:38 AM Only transfering 4 gig right now. 1 account uses 3 gig.
clockwork 11-12-2002, 06:56 AM What size (disk space/bandwidth) accounts are you offering?
How much are you going to allow the resellers to oversell themselves?
I'm not at all a business man, but I know I would certainly be basing my figures on the above.
The problem with web hosting is, not every client is going to use 1gb of bandwidth per month out of their 10gb plan... so the numbers will almost always be uncertain until you start gaining lots of clients and retaining them, and then look at the figures over X amount of time.
It's just too dynamic for you to compare one hosting company to another.... just focus on what services you will offer, and how you can meet those goals, rather than how others businesses are working :)
I'm not trying to troll, just trying to make you think for yourself
Darth 11-12-2002, 06:59 AM True, really depends on the client.
Aushosts 11-12-2002, 07:08 AM Thanks clockwork
What size (disk space/bandwidth) accounts are you offering?
At the moment I am thinking on cPanel.
Plan A:
1GB diskspace
10Gb transfer
Plan B:
2GB diskspace
20Gb transfer
Plan C:
3GB diskspace
40Gb transfer
Plan D:
4GB diskspace
60Gb transfer
Plan E:
5GB diskspace
80Gb transfer
How much are you going to allow the resellers to oversell themselves?
I am going to let them over sell as much as they like.

Yes I am well aware of that, I have about 8 clients at the moment and they only are using about 3Gb bw between them.
Techark 11-12-2002, 08:02 AM Hmm better put pencil to paper on this.
If you are going to let your resellers over sell as much as they want you are saying to them you can create as many accounts as you want and use every bit of space and transfer I offer you. So if you have 30 clients on a box say on plan B you could end up with a thousand domains hosted on that box using 2 x 30 = 60 gig of space and 600 gig of transfer and you are paying the overages becasue they are only using what you sold them.
I think you better rethink.
Aushosts 11-12-2002, 08:31 AM Good Point
clockwork 11-12-2002, 10:57 AM As a side note... the only way to really let them oversell by however much they want, and to properly accomodate that, is to charge pretty hefty overage fees.
This will make them plan ahead themselves, and order that bigger account from you.... and if you see the need when they order this account, place it on a server which is less populated.
It minimizes your risk a lot.
Aushosts 11-13-2002, 02:23 AM Yes that was the plan to have highish overchargers to encourage the bigger plans.
faculty 11-13-2002, 02:25 AM ALWAYS work your pricing out on the worst case scenario - Work it out to be able to support EVERY user using what they are allocated.
