I don't know how this place is for job ops, but i've had a a lot of response using monster.com. Though, you're probably looking for work from home? I can't help wonder though.. $5.50/hr?! I mean, even if you're just looking to build experience, i'd be asking at "very least" double that. I know i'd be a bit upset if I was a sys admin with the knowledge that someone out there is making more than me flipping burgers. I had a couple interviews with companies for development work, I was asking around $18/hr. They laughed at this, telling me the going rate was between $25-35. Either way, they never did call me back. Possibly it's a confidence thing, employers tend to think you're worth what you're putting on paper.

That's where your wrong man..

I am not looking for grave money. I do not need to support myself with this job, just simply to move around the web hosting world.

- It's not work if you like your job..

I love administrating Linux machines.. Hours and hours of tapping away at endless keys..

;)

Still though, people shouldn't have any argument, concern or anything about you asking for more. I too used to try and work with a company (I still do, but am fair to myself about it), not just for a company. I.e., I'd work with them on a smaller salary, because I know how many company's don't have a lot of money to pay out for the going rate(s). I ended up talking to some people and they asked how much I wanted an hour, I said I can't take any less than X amount of dollars... the response was "Well, that's not a problem at all.. but may I ask why you're not asking for more?"... I explained how I didn't want to scare them off with asking too much, because I know how many people say that they didn't think they could afford me, and how I try and cater to the people's budget, since I too don't do this because I *need* the money. It sounded good up til that point, and it seemed that sort of turned the offer and things seemed a little weird. Out of all the things they were impressed with, that seemed to make them question what I could do, and for good reason, really.

Still, even though they were very interested and basically said I had the job (Well, I am certain I had it), they never called or emailed back after that, and that was the one thing that changed. :-) Maybe I assume wrong about it, but by the wage I quoted at, they might very well had assumed if I don't know how much to ask or how much I should get an hour, that I might not know something else or know enough to know I deserve more.

I quit a job recently, because of a few reasons, but one of the main reasons, was that it was just far too little and I had far better offers I could pursue. I had to be fair to myself about it, even if I do it mostly because I enjoy it. Anyway, the point is, no one should have ANY reason to try and get away with paying you such a small wage, and they know it and they won't question or have a problem at all if you ask for more. That small of a wage too, they might assume that you won't stick around very long. There's no reason to ask that little, you still don't need to ask a huge amount ... I still don't ... but be reasonable and fair to yourself, because that's just far too small of a wage.
