I am running a 1ghz Pentium 3 red hat machine with 512 megs of RAM and a standard 40 gig 7200 rpm HD.
Most of the sites run email and simple web pages. Avg site takes about 20 megs of HD space and about 7 email accounts. I get 25 GBs of bandwidth per month.
Apache
MySQL - 18
PHP
Perl
How many sites should be cut-off before getting another server?

/me licks finger and sticks it into the air.
About 323.
Seriously: it all depends on the sites, CGI usage, mysql usage, email usage. It's hard to gauge -- just keep adding until you feel the server has had enough (with room to grow for your existing accounts/domains).
You could easily handle 500 domains on that server, or 2. Run some searches on here and you'll see many threads asking pretty much the same thing.

i did do a few searches and you are right. I need to sit down and iron out all the domains and see what my server can handle. That's was a broad question and need to be more clear.
Anyways thanks for the input. I was planning on no more than 100 domains before I get another server.

Base your decision on load. Watch your processor and get the ave. load over a course of a week. The processor will spike off and on, but you can figure out a rough average. Using this rule of thumb will help you maintain a healthy machine. I would pick a percentage that you are comfortable with and where you think the server will perform the best.
I think you can fit 200 sites comfortably.

If your sever ever locks up because of CPU usage - get another =)
I know hosts who have fit more than 400 Domains on a 1.7Ghz computer, Plesk CP.

That's like saying you can fit 200 people into a building. Depends on the size of the building and what those people want to do in the building [or shopping center for Gary. :D]
This issue has been discussed heavily. ;)
Here's a statement that was generally agreed upon -
"The number of domains on a server is not always relevant to that server's actual performance. However, the increase in the number of domains on a server will also increase the chances of someone affecting the server's actual performance."
Thread of interest - here (http://webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85282&highlight=domains+per+server).
I was assuming the number based on this:
Most of the sites run email and simple web pages. Avg site takes about 20 megs of HD space and about 7 email accounts.

Seems like you might want to give people more storage space. I note that I don't know your allowance now, but 20 megs per site means you have room for at least 1500 sites on your server's hard drive. Perhaps you can pick a number of sites to host that you think would be fair. 300 sites with 100 megs each could get you well over $1000 per month, which sounds like it would yield a fair profit margin for your server. But then again, what's fair?
