I was wondering, which is the best web hosting gimmic?

How are these gimmics? Who offers Miva Merchant with every account?

Free domain or free month of hosting seem to work. I offer a free domain if you pay yearly, and its amazing how many clients decide to pay yearly cause of it instead of monthly. As well it works out to a free month just about anyways, due to quite a few clients of mine already owning their domains and asking what they get out of paying yearly. :)

For us we consider it, because not all hosting companies provide those.

But, we have alrady decided on the free domain. With all of our packages, from 5 bucks up to 80. And no time comitment.

Also, does anyone suggest a backup server idea?

Like we have a shared reseller account, and we want to backup all data NEW ONLY to a server in a different datacenter. Any suggestions? We won't have more then 10GB of data and we need to backup every 2 days.

I'd suggest rsync but I'm not too sure how you'd go about that without root access. Might be worth looking into though

rsync will do pretty much anything you want it to do. Install rsync and type 'man rsync'. You'll get a huge list of options that let you do... pretty much anything you want to do. :) There's been rsync discussions here before, but I'm not sure if any code has been discussed (for backup scripts). Run some searches and see what you can dig up. I know rsync's home page has some sample scripts you can play with.

I think a good plan with plenty of space and bandwidth and php/mysql etc. + <$10 per month is a good sales 'pull' factor.

That's what I believe most buyers look at primarily.

If you've got a good agreement with a domain registrar (and don't offer $2/month plans) you can do well offering free domain registration, since you can often register domains for as little as $8/year as a reseller...

I can get domains at $8.00/yr. and our lowest plan is $5.00.
So, that means if they leave in 1 months, I loose $3.00, but I doubt that will happen.

I would do something like "Pay yearly and get free domain registration!"

That way no matter what you've covered your bases...

Well, the key is, if you are good they won't generally leave. :)

Or you could keep the name in your name for the first 6 months or year or whatever.

I like that's best to do, but... They can't tranfer until 60 days of reg. is up, and then they have to pay a renawal fee at their new registar. So they are paying twice.

Once word is out about it, you will have people doing exactly as you doubt will happen. You will see though, no need to take my word on it. set yourself as the administrative contact for the first month, and then change it to thier information once the contract term is near up..

I have noticed that all the "gimmicks" that we have tried ie: 2 months free with yearly, one or two years free domain registration don't really increase sales at all.. I mean its something nice to add to your index page but dont expect many extra sales from it..

Your right, but that is why we are offering first month and get a domain. And I am not worried about them ditching us for the domain

1) We will win them over with our customer service.
2) They will have to pay their registar for another year when transfering.

And maybe we can make it as long as the domain is with us (and they got it when signing up for a hosting account) then if they stop hosting, they have to take the domain with in 2 months or be charged for the domain.:D
