I just saw this movie today and I think it was pretty good. Some very funny parts, but I won't get into that since I don't think Chicken would appreciate it. ;)

If you have seen it, what are your thoughts on it?

The acting was pretty good, and what made me kinda mad is how little kids got to get in, I saw this like 8 year old boy, and he really should NOT have been let in.

Although, I really was hoping Em would sing Loose Yourself at the shelter. :(

peace out gangstaz

Ahh yes my 13 year old sister in law got in last night she also said it was pretty good.. Funny thing is I remember being 13 and trying to get into R rated movies several times to no avail.. I guess times have changed.

I am suprised..

In Australia, I went to go purchase The Eminem show - I am 17.

The guy asked for ID

Luckily my older brothers were with me and paid for it :stickout:

I'm not sure I'd like it. I listened to the samples of the soundtrack and liked the popular song now, and another one was OK, but really didn't care for the non-Eminem ones. I like the popular Eminem songs in general, but not all his songs (like the *most* popular song - singular - from each CD).

Not that I've ever liked *any* movie soundtrack all that much, so I suppose you can't judge from that.

Yeah I think it just depends on the theatre's policies and their strictness. Like, my bro is 18 and he saw Jackass at Tinseltown theatre and they asked for ID, but then at a theatre more close to us we had no problem whatsoever getting into 8 Mile. :D

Yeah I guess the world is slacking off...

The guy asked for IDOMG! I never knew they even carded ppl for CDs! Atleast I have never been! Good thing they don't do that in the US or I wouldn't have half of the CDs I have now. :D

Luckily my older brothers were with me and paid for it Hehe yeah, those older siblings do come in handy don't they. ;)

Yeah you are more like my bro, he didn't care as much as me to see it, but he did anyway and he said it was alright. But yay, Chicken likes some of Eminem's beats, rock on. :D What would your students say if they heard that?? lol Or wait, what grade do you teach?

Although I do think Eminem is somewhat of a talented rapper, the 8th Mile movie wasn't as expected from me.

The 'exposered' part was very uncomfortable... If you know what I mean.

Also, I saw more than a couple young children/teens (most likely Eminem fans) who were accepted into the theater. I guess enforcing the Rated-R rating isn't so much of a deal nowadays.

The part near the beginning was very uncomfortable... If you know what I mean. What DO you mean? I'm confused. Cuz they said the F word like a couple hundred times? Hehe, yeah that gets kind of annoying. ;)

They do at Kmart. Kmart cards you for spray paint too... I learned that the hard way. Ohh, lol! Well, I never buy CDs at K-Marts or Wal-Marts, cuz they usually have only the edited versions, and explicid is what I usually get. :D

But anyway back on topic.....

When I went to buy Unreal Tournament: Game of The Year Edition, the cashier carded me... For a computer game! Yet, nobody carded me when I bought Duke Nukem 3D when I was 16.

3rd, but my kids have heard these songs and probably have seen the movie already. My parents don't seem to do that 'parental filtering' that one should do. One of them brought up the movie Blow and a quick poll revealed that over 1/2 had seen the movie. Nothing like a tale of drugs and violence for the young!

Oddly though, they related it to Imagination which is the unit we are doing in Language Arts (the part at the end when he imagines that his daughter visited him). I was impressed with the connection at least...

This came into conversation over at vB.. I'll post what I posted over there...

8 Mile is suppose to be based on his life (roughly based).

8 Mile is where he grew up in Michigan (Warren, Michigan).

They make it out to be totally hoody and all that, and Warren isn't anything like they make it out to be. Sure it may have a "hood section" of the city, but overall its not that bad. Warren is in the outskirts of Detroit. You want to see hood, you go to Detroit -- intercity Detroit.

I probably lived a harder life in my first 4 years of life, and Eminem did his whole life.

I would never go see 8 Mile. I don't really care for Eminem or his music, and I sure don't care about his "hard life" he's lead.

But personally, I have better things to spend my money on than a Eminem movie. *shrug*

you know that much about eminem? i seriously doubt you had a rougher life then him....i take it your mom had sex in exchange for drugs and stuff like that?

I know a lot about Eminem's life, and I know what my life was like.

If you only knew, and I'm not going to explain it here -- that would take up too much of your time reading.

My mom never did drugs. My mom wasn't as stupid as Eminem's mother.. ;) But I've gone through enough sh!t in 4 years to last a couple lifetimes. My dad did drugs, was an alcoholic, was abusive, tried to kill my mother and I (a number of times)... was sent to prison for 18 years, and then out of nowhere popped back into my life without me wanting him to be there. And then tried to force me to take care of him while he got his life together (like that would ever happen with him still drinking and doing drugs).

Sure, I can't compare my mom with his (who would want to), but on a personal level, I know in my heart that my life was worse than his in the first 4 years of my life. Nothing like going to sleep at night, fearing that your father might come after you want take you away in the night, to never see my mom again... or worse, kill my mom, or me..

I'm not going to defend what I said anymore than I have already. If you don't agree with it, fine.. its fine with me. We have our own beliefs and minds. So be it.

Eminem is a self-absorbed music genius with psychotic behavior. And to claim he had the roughest life of all people on earth is ridiculous.

I thought it was awesome, i love the hardcore disses, and eminem is a tight actor because you really can't predict him. Just my thoughts, I'd go see it again.

Welcome to America it's called capitalism. He did have a pretty rough life though, I've researched him. I think why most people diss on him is either cause they don't like his music, they don't like the fact he's a white rapper, or they don't like the fact that he dissed big time on ICP (can't blaim him).

Off topic: Their is nothing more "gangster" then squabbling with a 105lb yoga instructor slash herbivore (Moby). How did Eminem ever muster up enough courage to make such a bold and brave statement. Wow, what a tough guy!

Eminem is talented, but is beginning to paint himself into a corner stylistically IMHO. It's going to be hard for him to really stretch beyond the slim shady angry rapper guy thing. The fact that his movie is basically an auto-biography is proof of that. If he did a movie where he was something completely removed from his day job, I think it'd do a lot more for his credibility.

But I haven't seen the movie yet...although I will, once I grab a girl to go with! :D

In my opinion Eminem is a fad, he will not be a prevalent force in music 10, 20, or 30 years from now. He's certainly not a "music genius" as someone stated earlier, perhaps in the genre of rap he is, but he isn't even on the map in comparision to Bach, Mozart, and the like.

That being said, I don't see a reason to kill anyone though, lol. I'm assuming most of the Eminem fans are younger folks. That's part of being young...annoying everyone else, with dress, music, and whatever else. 15 years ago I was an annoying punk listening to annoying music...

Hey,
I saw the movie last night to.. It was pretty decent.. intensive i would say...

as for Eminem not being like mozart and stuff... you cant really compare the two.. they are 2 totally different musicians.. some of Eminems music is really good... the words convey exactly what goes in true life... it really explains the situation simply and effectively...

true, he might be not be a fad 10 years down the line, but was mozart ever a fad? :)

PencWeb

LOL yeah I totally agree with kunal...

Who cares about classical music and crap! lol It's too old no one cares anymore. :D And of course Em won't be around and popular within 10-20 years, he'll be too old! How many rappers do you know who have been in that industry for over 30 years? :P Yeah and for real, mozart wasn't a fad, it's all they had! Tight that rhymed. :D That was like a million years ago, lets get with the 21st century ok? lol

He's a pretty good actor, for what he has gone thru life. He's successful in his music, although I think he may settle down within a couple of years perhaps, cuz he's got a life to live with his baby girl and I don't think he will keep his career when she is older, dunno.

peace out, and Chicken you got one heck of a class. :)

PencWeb
11-12-2002, 12:18 PM
You didn't, but you made it sound like he is all popular and everyone loves him and all the stations play classical.

classical + country = worst music ever created :D

MDJ2000
11-12-2002, 12:50 PM
LOL, "I made it sound like" huh? You sure it's not "you interpreting it as"? Well, I was simply implying that on a level of sheer talent, he pales in comparision. I actually made a comment that he, in fact, may be a "genius" in the rap genre.

I do however find it amusing that an Eminem fan is saying that any other music (much less classical) is the "worst music ever created". Without such music, Eminem wouldn't exist. Basically, you like Eminem, and disagreed with me, so you say that what I appreciate "sucks", are you following me here?

PencWeb
11-12-2002, 02:56 PM
Without such music, Eminem wouldn't exist. Oh is that so now? How can you prove that?

Trace the roots of modern music and you'll find it crossing paths with classical music at many points.

Don't care to comment on any of my real points huh? Just use the old condescending  9 times, quite the conversationalist I must say. Regardless, there's nothing further to be gained, my points stand pretty well on their own.

Rotifer
11-12-2002, 03:31 PM
What you think of as "classical" music established the modalities and forms that, combined with centuries of evolution, culminated in modern (Western) music. Mozart, Bach, Handel, Beethoven, Stravinsky ... all were fads at one point or other; some music endures, some doesn't. Eminem may, but rap artists seem to have a short musical lifespan. Their image/persona (as one sees in this thread) is an essential component of their saleability, eventually drawing them to more lucrative media - film.

MDJ2000

Besides, everyone knows all music after 1979 is a shoddy attempt at recreating the magic that was Captain and Tenille.

Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, etc are all legend! Even 300 years after their deaths, people still play their songs and they still feed many lives through their works! 20 years from now? People will still play these musics and you probably won't hear any more rap :) How about 300 years from now? :D

Rotifer

True ... the proper progression is -

Classical ---> The Captain & Tenille ----> Eminem

Oh, Mozart was indeed a fad in his day. Here's a quote from www.mozartproject.org

The pattern established here would be repeated in major centers all over Europe. First, Wolfgang and Nannerl would perform at the most influential local court. Then private concerts would follow as the lesser nobility competed to entertain one another with an appearance by the "miracle children" of Salzburg.

Pretty much everyone in the hip-hop world is a fad. The lifespan is typically shorter than an NFL running back. With the way the audence changes, the older you get the less appeal you get. If you're successful for 10 years in the genre you've become wildly successful.

I think that classical artists and music of today are just plain not comparable. The world is too different now from what it was then. That said, I think Eminem is one of the very few talented "pop" artists out there. I'm almost ashamed to grow up in a generation where most of the musical artists are either studio stars ( can't really sing ) or have built their careers off of the way they look, most of the music just plain SUCKS. There will be no 'classics from the 80's, 90's and 00's(<-??? lol )'. Marketing is an amazing thing..

I saw it on Friday... It was pretty good, but since I'm not an eminem fan I wouldn't of picke it (but it wasn't my choice, I told my date she could pick the movie.)

I went to the 12:50am show (I guess that's actually really early Saturday morning) and it was nuts - it was playing in 4 theatres and all of them started at the same time. We got there at 12:15 and the show was already sold out (we bought tickets before) and lines were out the door. The showing before us didn't get out until 12:45 - we didn't get into the theatre until 1:15, and the movie didn't even start until 1:35ish.. add on previews and a movie that's right under 2 hours (111 minutes according to imdb.org) the movie didn't end until 3:45am, it was a long night to say the least.

Omg Neil, why would you go see it that late? lol! Man, I don't know if I could stay awake that late, but I guess when you're with your lady you frankly don't give a damn. :agree:
