Ok, due to the recent debacle (http://webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85923) :eek3:  with Paysystems and their recurring transactions, I'm starting to investigate full merchant services. I'd like some feedback from Australian hosts with full merchant accounts etc. :)
(1). What is a good processing solution for an Australian based business?
(2). What automated recurring solutions can be used in conjunction with that processing service?
Thank you. :)

Bob commonwealth is good they have a software package you can buy that does recurring billing on a monthly basis. But here is your problem there is no Australian bank that can charge in US $ at the present time.
Sometime next year this supposed to change but at this time even with the software, each month you would have to adjust amounts for the proper exchange rate. Unless you switch all your customers to AUD$ then the ones in the US are going to see changing charges each month.
There is a New Zealand payment prcessor that can charge in the USD but you have to open a NZ bank account and the % is high plus the set up charge is around $1200.00 AUD.
I have fought this battle already you are welcome to email me or call and I will explain all I have learnt about it over the last few months.
I've still found the quickest and cheapest way is a standard mail/telephone/fax/Internet merchant account with my bank - NZ$100 set-up and as the orders come through get them authorised by phone - once accepted (usually 30 seconds or so) send out customers details - fill in my little slip with authorisation code and bank the following day.
We have accounts software that on the 20th of each month automatically sends out electronic invoices and I spend maybe an hour at the most getting authorisations by phone...1 hour out of a month and I know all my cc's have been authorised and the moneys in my account the next day.
There are several systems available in NZ but all expensive, still buggy and papertrails are terrible - there is always WorldPay I suppose but it's getting it to fit in with existing sites.
Just my 2 cents worth

I found once we got over about 400 clients this method became a headache. I could not imagine even attempting it with the volume we have now, but for low traffic sites it's ok to get started in this way.
