eyckzo 11-09-2002, 02:46 AM Hey everyone.
I don't know how many people want free bannerless web hosting and e-mail. But, I've dedicated 2 of my servers to doing free hosting so if you want it it's free, come and get it. :)

Besides telling you that you posted this in the wrong forum, can I ask you a few questions?
What is in it for you (your free web hosting business)?
Where will you get the money to pay for your servers (unless someone gave you two free servers, but as all of us know, there is no such thing as free)?
How will you expect to hire professional staff when your customer base (if you call them customers) gets very large with no profits (unless you plan on having banner advertisements on your main site)?
All of these questions can be basically drawn into: How can you possibly offer a product for free, when it truly isn't free?
P.S. I don't mean to be bashing you or your business, but you need to consider these when trying to offer free web hosting (unless I am missing something very large here).
eyckzo 11-09-2002, 03:53 AM I have a hosting company which makes pretty good money, dedicated servers are dirt cheap nowadays and I make pretty good money where I work, and $99 a month is not that hard to pay.
As far as staff, I already have 4 people working with me doing support (once I get PHP Live installed). What do I get out of it you ask? Making people happy. :)
As far as posting in the wrong forum -- woops. :)
Any other questions
net-trend 11-09-2002, 04:06 AM Would you let your current customers know about your free webhosting services?

Why is it so hard to believe that someone will offer a product for free? There are some people out there who like to to these things as a hobby. A few years ago I also offered a completely free service (even without banners) on the Internet. I just loved the fact that someone actually used a product that I made on the Internet!! Now I do it for the $$$$.
Lippy 11-09-2002, 04:40 AM Just a few technical questions.
1: Whats the storage space?
2: Whats the monthly bandwidth?
3: What type of pipe you running?
4: Reserve a spot for me just incase I like your answers.

I think it's great that some people offer some type of services "totally" free. I do myself, but hosting isn't one of them, for obvious reasons. It wouldn't be cost effective for me.
I understand completely why smidwap asked those questions. In most cases the host shuts down or go against their words and start putting up banners.

eyckzo 11-09-2002, 05:40 PM Space: is only 20 meg (but there's no actual quotas)
Bandwidth: no real limits, the box has 500gig per month, if i don't go over it, i'm happy. :)
Pipe: it's co-located on he.net
And we will never put banners on our sites. I HATE/DISPISE Banners. They're evil and piss me off. :)
I've always wanted to run a successful free web hosting provider and never could because I didn't make enuf money w/ my paid host -- I just landed a huge deal and pretty much the profit I make off that would pay for 10 free servers. :)
So, if you want a free account, come on over and get it. You can also get a "shell" with your hosting account -- We're going to get some good vhosts and allow IRC from it too down the road.
Enjoy.
progex 11-09-2002, 10:04 PM Thanks for your kind service to the web hosting community.
It's always nice for someone to have so much generosity towards others. :)
lisadragon 11-10-2002, 01:28 AM I agree...

eyckzo 11-10-2002, 07:05 AM I wrote all the scripts myself.
It's all PHP. I'd be happy to set it up for you.
