Tazzman 11-08-2002, 07:58 PM How many years you worked with them ?
The only one on that list that has been around for more than a year is rackshack. FDC has been around for about 9-10 months, Unitedcolo I would guess is about 2-3 months old.
I used to have an FDC server. Had it for 6 months but then got rid of it as their support people seemed to start ignoring my emails about long term ongoing issues they were at first happy to try and fix. There was also an issue of a failed harddrive that was dealt with totally incorrectly (my server was down for over a week while there had been plenty of indications of problems before the drive actually failed and they knew about them). At one point also my Athlon XP processor mysteriously got replaced by a Duron, while I had payed to have the processor upgraded to the XP. When asked about it, nobody knew anything and I had to wait over a month to get my XP processor back. Network speeds when I first signed up were over 1 MB/s, by the time I left they had gone down to below the 100 kb/s mark. I don't know what they are like now they have switched to yipes.
I currently have an UnitedColo server. It needed kernel recompiling when I first got it as the original kernel didn't support the drivers for the NIC included in the hardware. I thought getting this done would be impossible, but the request was answered within the hour and the kernel was fully recompiled 6 hours later. Network speed is good (Constant at just over 1 MB/s for me, incoming and outgoing, making me think it's on a 10 MBIT port, but there's nothing wrong with that). Support seems to be readily available and willing to help.
Remember, yipes or not, FDC is still single homed while UGC is multihomed. UGC has honoured its uptime SLA in the past while I never saw a cent from FDC while I had plenty of downtime, at one point my server was down for 2 weeks because I was away and they decided to take it offline and play with the hardware a bit (without prior warning). They never checked whether it came back online correctly when they were done and I had to tell them when I got back after 2 weeks that my server was down and had been down for 2 weeks.
UGC probably isn't the perfect DC/host, but it seems to be pretty good for a budget solution. You might also want to look at atwebhost. They have a high setup fee, but do sometimes run specials in these forums and also are a good budget solution.
Considering all the above, I would suggest in order:
Rackshack
UnitedColo
FDCServers
AntiSpamHosts 11-08-2002, 10:43 PM Personally, RackShack is a good place.
BiGWill 11-08-2002, 10:55 PM anyone got one of these 10mbit deals at unitedcolo?

Mac
last time i visited FDC Servers there paypal account was frozen for fraud or something, i emailed them asking how i could purchase a server a why there paypal account was FROZEN and my email was ignored, so i would avoid FDC Servers at all costs.
unitedcolo there is a few posts about there cogent connection so i would avoid them to
rackshack has been around for a long time and is trusted by many users so i would choose them out of the three,
also you might want to take a look at www.nocster.com

hostingsp 11-09-2002, 04:33 AM Last time i checked unitedcolo it's true internap , cogent, he, and wworks
K2rbka 11-09-2002, 05:02 AM Greetings,
This is my current experience with United.Colo =
Support - I wouldn't know, as I had only asked for one thing so far, and that was to setup a couple reverse dns entries for me. They were extremely prompt with their reply as what's shown below =

I could reverse the IPs by 9PM that night, so I was pretty stoked :)
Networks = A bit sketchy, as they have been shady with admitting who they are with, but they use HE, wworks, cogent, and maybe using internap (can't be sure with the shady dns tactics in traceroute)
When I got my server, it came with a block of 10 IPs, but I really don't know their policy on more IPs, nor do I need to, because I probably won't even use the 10 they gave me :)
Billing is monthly for me, and with all the downtime they've had, they billed me less for renewal. I liked that :D
I currently run a HLDS and a QWSV on my United.Colo box, and everyone on the west coast pings 40-60 without spikes. The only programs I believe you can't run on the box is an IRCd or an IRC bot. Other than that it's free reign.
United Colo is a new company and had an extremely bumpy start.
I wouldn't suggest them if you're looking to put customers on their boxes at this time, because they receive quite a few DoS attacks. Wait a few months on United.Colo so they can stabilize. As for the rest of the companies, I couldn't honestly tell ya :)
mdrussell 11-09-2002, 05:08 AM Out of any of the providers mentioned in the thread, you won't find better than DedicatedNow. Their parent company, Pegasus / Pwebtech has been impressive for us.
mushrew 11-09-2002, 05:12 AM Unitedcolo has a shaky start but they're doing pretty well now. I was really amazed at how they actually gave you the block of 10 IPs upon receipt of server. You don't have to mess with making up excuses to appease your provider/ARIN and all your IPs are all in one nice little range, from 66.111.50.1 to 66.111.50.10 for example, rather than having them all over the place if you request them a few at a time at other places such as rackshack.
ho247 11-09-2002, 05:12 AM Out of the 3 companies that you listed, I've only been with Rackshack so here are some comments about them:
SupportThey don't offer support for any other issue not related to the server software since they provide servers on an unmanaged basis. If you're getting a server from here, you either need to have the knowledge to run a server or have a systems administrator that you can depend on to ask questions and to sort out any problems you may have with the server.
Internet NetworksRackshack's network is very good and reliable I would say. They have mutiple gigabit connections to the Internet from different providers. I've heard that they are also bringing in a few more gigabit links. Over the year, Rackshack have improved their quality of service and network dramatically. They've listened to what their customers want and have provided it.
Free IPs (is it hard to get them?)No, they are very easy to get. There is a section in the member's area where you can submit for new IP addresses. When you purchase a server you automatically get one free IP, which is the main server IP. You can get an additional 7 free IP addresses without charge.
Billing (Monthly or Yearly?)They only do billing on a monthly basis.
Full control (Are you allowed to install what you want in your server, like CPanel, Game Servers.. etc?)Basically, yes. Once you've got the server, you may install anything you like on it as long as it doesn't break their TOS or AUP. We've installed CPanel on a few servers at Rackshack and most likely will soon be installing and managing game servers too.
How many years you worked with them? We've been with them for about 10-11 months now, so over this time, we have been able to see Rackshack grow from near the start of when they started to offer dedicated servers at the $99/month level.

K2rbka 11-09-2002, 05:14 AM Yea, I would agree with voxtreme-matt.
I managed to snag one of those pre-sale servers 5 hours after Matt McCormick started the thread.
I have high hopes for DedicatedNOW's server, being in NAC and all, with such a high bandwidth allowance :)
Here's to hoping DedicatedNOW starts out on the right foot!
netdude 11-09-2002, 07:12 AM got me a couple of 'em... they runnin' great... :D would have hoped for a 100Mbps port for the 3000GB/month quota, but its only a 10Mbps full-duplex port... o well... i'm still happy... heh

·Free IPs (is it hard to get them ? ) : Fast and easy.
·Billing (Monthly or Yearly? ) : No billing or receipt.
·Full control (Are you allowed to install what you want in your server, like CPanel, Game Servers.. etc ? ) : Yes
·How many years you worked with them ? More than 2 months
regards

Tazzman 11-09-2002, 09:49 AM A little about UnitedColo's network: I've been with them for 2 - 3 weeks now and haven't noticed a single problem as yet. I also haven't seen a single traceroute (in- or outbound) go over cogent as yet. I just did a traceroute to Cogent from my UGC server and it went over internap. A traceroute to Rackshack from my server went over HE.net (paix.he.net).
It's good to see UnitedColo is improving :)
Anyways, personally I would try to get one of those dedicatednow.com servers and CPanel is only $20/month!!!
:)
Dedicatednow looks good! Am giving them a try!
Reference 11-10-2002, 12:40 AM Their bandwidth seems cheap.
How is that the network uptime of FDC is so varied?
Some people think the uptime is good some are down for hours on end. Can someone explain this?
Tazzman 11-10-2002, 09:07 AM FDC run multiple 100 MBIT circuits. If your server happens to be on one of the circuits that never goes down, you'll have good uptime, if your server isn't, tough luck...
