Kaumil 11-08-2002, 05:04 PM Paypal is so useful though. To me anyway.
clocker1996 11-08-2002, 05:47 PM paypal has been great for me
ive ran into my share of problems, but they were resolved quickly.
genaldi 11-08-2002, 06:09 PM In the years I've been with them, I've never had one problem with them :).
smidwap 11-08-2002, 06:09 PM Then what are all these comments about PayPal "ripping me off" and "stealing my money" about? Are they just a bunch of hog wash or what?
genaldi 11-08-2002, 06:14 PM I've read some of them, of course there's going to be some bad transactions with the amount of volume they do. Guess I've just been lucky not to have any in the thousands of transactions I've done with them ....
Kaumil 11-08-2002, 06:52 PM Some people over react to certain mishaps. The local bank does that too.
ThomasC 11-08-2002, 10:28 PM Just got $200 via paypal, no problems.
ZiCmaN 11-08-2002, 11:05 PM They have their problems, but so does everyone else. I have had a few problems, but I can say that they were resolved in a timely manner.
I have one right now which is kinda small but still they are holding $112 from my account. Dude won auction for a receiver, received it said he didn't want it, tried to return it to me, but it came back busted. It was insured and said that he could make the insurance claim via FEDEX, but I wouldn't refund him. blah, blah, blah
he filed complaint with paypal, they investigated it and then closed it saying that i proved delivery, etc. WELL 2 months later he has filed a complaint with his CC company and now they are holding it again while it is investigated. This has been going on for 2 months and it remains listed as pending and nothing else.
This sucks but guess what? They are still the easiest to use. so even now I recommend them.
:D
klisis 11-09-2002, 01:06 AM I've been using Paypal since its early beginning. So far, I've had no major problems. There have been indeed a few small problems I've ran into but they were resolved properly.
i do heavily rely on them.
i have had major problems with them in the past, if you withdraw alot of money they freeze your account and cancel all your subscribtions without notice and wont unfreeze your account until you fax them several times.
anyway, i got all my issues with them sorted so i still use them and it works great for me :)
jus dont try withdraw to much at a time ;-)
NexDog 11-09-2002, 07:01 AM How much is too much? Not many clients pay us by PayPal - around $500US/mo. No problems with that.
couldnt tell you the exact amount, it triggered for me when withdrawing $1,300.00
think 300-500 should be fine..
akashik 11-09-2002, 08:21 AM PayPal's a great system for getting money from point A to point B. I think a lot of people fall into trouble when they start to use it more as a payment processor of sorts, or as a bank.
If you think of it more as 'Western Union', and use the same caution as you would with people paying anything by check then then you're usually ok.
That's not to say some people haven't had a problem with them of course.

Abigail 11-09-2002, 03:24 PM I have always felt that using PayPal as your primary e-commerce solutions looks rather unprofessional.
I think anyone who does e-commerce as a career rather than a hobby should have a merchant account; plain and simple.

silock 11-09-2002, 05:41 PM I've been with paypal since March 2002...No problems since, I'm even getting my own paypal debit card soon. It should arrive in a couple weeks!
Webtrash 11-11-2002, 08:13 PM Amen. The other thing is I find it hard to get support from Paypal - there support is consumer-grade typical .com "do anything to keep them from talking to a person" while the old line merchant accounts have industrial-strength, efficient 24 hour a day support.
Hey, anyone know of any lists or forums like this where small ecommerce issues are discussed like setting up a website to accept credit cards, alternatives, etc??

aethel 11-14-2002, 03:52 AM I will agree that paypal looks a TAD unprofessional, however if you're very ecommerce savvy then you know it is not much harder to get a credit card merchant account.
Furthermore, especially for things like webhosting (and ebay, which recently bought paypal), where a lot of times you're dealing with small companies who you are not so sure you can trust, knowing that I didn't have to give them my CC info means a heck of a lot. So actually.. unless you are a big name who has been around for a while, paypal actually makes me more likely to sign up..
robertpr007 11-14-2002, 07:05 PM My first post, so be gentle, eh?
I was scanning the great information and stopped on this one about PayPal. I lost $500 twice [which the bank credited back] via a PalPal account. I changed CC numbers the first time, thinking it was a fluke. I then ordered something online with PP and the event was fine. The following month, another mystery $500 PP deduct. Bank saved me again.
I was then directed to the financial pages of the San Francisco Chron and the LA Times, both with articles about PayPal and the US Justice Department. The articles focused on one issue: after 100,000 filed consumer complaints about PP, the USJD refused to take any more, and turned them back to the appropriate states.
This put Cal in a serious bind as they cannot handle the load, and the USJD will not accept any more Paypal complaints.
I guess it's one of those situations where if you've had success, then wonderful. Stay with it. But for us who have gone through the legal swamps with PayPal, they are very risky.
progex 11-14-2002, 08:21 PM Has anyone had any problems after the aquisition of eBay?
I'm guessing PayPal was glad to hand over the company from headaches of user complaints. Serves them good. :)
AtlantaWebhost.com 11-15-2002, 12:55 AM I have been using PayPal since May of this year and have not run into any problems. Rietta Solutions is a somewhat complex business consisting of two divisions, a hosting and a software division. We have our own merchant account that is generally used for processing hosting transactions, we use regsoft.com to process software sales, and the option of PayPal is provided as a convenience option for customers.
Bottom line: Some customers want to use PayPal, so I offer it as an option.
I hope you all are having a great week!
