Why is it that cobalt servers seem to be avilable in 400 Mhz and such when linux and windows are mostly going for above 1 Ghz? Just curious as to if the cobolt servers are used differently and such.

Do they use a GUI? I suppose the Cobalts have always used net based interfaces, avoiding the need for cpu intensive GUIs. Lippy 11-08-2002, 11:27 AM this is where I saw 300 Mhz CPU type of thing and thats what got me wondering. http://www.skynetweb.com/dedicated/cobalt_raq.php paulwilson 11-08-2002, 01:28 PM Cobalt RaQ 3 Server? These servers are no longer produced by Sun (Cobalt), but they are still good workhorses.... Cephren 11-09-2002, 07:47 AM 1 300MhZ cpu will probably either be a Raq3. K6-2 300 chip If you can find an obsolete K6-2 450 chip lying around, you can replace the 300mHz with it. Technology from 2 years ago, but still work wonders especially for offering very low cost hosting for limited diskspace. ie 25, 50, 100 megabyte accounts with no PHP. With PHP compiled onto the Raq3, depending on what sites the server will host, its not generally a good idea. But as I have pointed out, rememebr to upgrade the ram to 512 pc-100 sdram....(which is the max it can take) An affordable solution for basic hosting. Emails, ftp, and static websites. cbtrussell 11-09-2002, 11:05 AM If you can find an obsolete K6-2 450 chip lying around, you can replace the 300mHz with it. Sure you can, but it'll still run at 300Mhz. :-) Lippy 11-09-2002, 11:43 AM The speed the CPU will run it is dependent on the motherboards ability to support the CPU, so techniclly it could run a 450 CPU but it would need a motherboard that can handle it, or else it would be a 450 running at 300 mhz. cbtrussell 11-09-2002, 07:01 PM Thanks for clarifying... RichTek 11-10-2002, 05:28 PM There's a mod to get the CPU to 500 MHz on a Raq 3. Search google and I'm sure you'll find it. cbtrussell 11-10-2002, 08:20 PM Just to be clear, you can't do that with a 300 or 450Mhz CPU. You have to buy a 500Mhz+ CPU. RichTek 11-11-2002, 11:35 AM Yep, you use a AMD K6-2 500 Mhz. I've had two Raq 3's with the mod for 6 months, but I also saw where someone shorted the MB. Use at your own risk. |
