I would like to know what I should charge for a 135x70 pixel ad on a virtual pet site. The site hasn't opened yet...but for the first month....out stat educated estimate is aroun 1 million hits and anywhere from 30,000 members - 50,000 members. Also I do't know how much I should charge if I had an ad item.

My suggestion:

Until you get solid stats, dont sell your adspace

I'm not sure how much you could get, but there's always a potential for a lot of $$$.

As soon as you open your site, find some way to get demographics (age group, sex, physical region, browser, O/S, interests etc) The more non-personal information you collect the more you are likely to get from your advertisers.

hmm,
why not add a few of the above questions to your signup form, i doubt any php script could detect the age or sex of a visitor lol :)

I would start off with the adv. being $.10 per 1 page view, and require a minimum purchase of maybe... 500 page views.

Lol, I have a bad bad image in my head now of a PC checking your sex whenever you fill out an online form!

May I ask how did you get around 100,000 visitors before you site even opened?

Also, if you advertised where?

Thanks!

noooo...lol...I havn't gotten that many yet...only about 5000 a month right now. I am saying I have estimated that many from studying other sites like mine when they launch

$.10 per page view?

If I'm reading this right, you're going to charge $100CPM?

I have submitted my site to as many online game sites that I could find...including the best one of them all (topwebgames.com)

That will bring in about 30,000 members and then it will grow from word of mouth. I might do some advertising on other sites if it is needed....but I seriously doubt I will need to.

i think you will find it hard to get 30,000 members without any form of paid advertising to launch the site. But goodluck.

i am almost completely posotive no form of paid ads will be necesary by whatching other similar sites at their launch. They have all started the same way as me and gotten 20,000-30,000 members in the first week or two.

Ok, go get your 20-30,000 members then you will have no problem attracting sponsorship ;)

Before you are able to charge an arm and a leg you need to figure out the following:

Full Demographics:
Avg. Age Sex, etc. etc. of visitors

Click Ratio: How many clicks per CPM

Solid Stats

Also, you need a few referrals that have made $$ off your banner ads.

what is CPM

dherman76

CPM=Cost Per Thousand

You better make sure your hosting provider can handle 20,000+ users...

>> 1 million hits

You should refer to these types of things as page views or unique visitors. A million hits could come from one huge page with a million images on it... (I doubt that it really could, but in theory)

>> $.10 per page view

No way, thats $100 CPM. More like $.05 to $.50 per click I've seen or $1 CPM to $10 CPM. It all depends on the industry, the relevancy of the banners to your content (huge!), etc.

And yes, getting demographics is huge, having other banner advertisers is huge, and a good reference or two is good as well.

wut do u mean having OTHER banner advertisers?

UH-Matt

to cut a long story short.. nobody will want to advertise until you ARE GETTING THE HITS / VISITORS !!

Anyone could claim they are starting a site which will have 30000 members, take some advertising funds and run.

Let me straighten this up.
-you have no site
-you have no stats
-you have no members
-you have no idea what CPM is

YOU WANT PEOPLE TO ADVERTISE WITH YOU?

Not to be rude, but lets be realistic here...

How are you going to build a site with 1,000,000 hits and 30,000 members and sell advertising, yet not know what CPM is???
This doesn't make sense to me...

ok, first of all....yes i do have a site, it hasn't re-opened yet...but I had it open for about a day and got 5,000 members. And why do you think I am posting a question about advertising if I already knew all of this stuff?

UH-Matt

WOW! That is great, do you want to do some marketing for my site? 5k members in a day = 1.8million members per year... lets be real here!

I am not lying! I have a virutal pet site and those generate a ton of members especially since I have it listed on topwebgames.com

In an intoxicated state....

I believe it is possible. However, I also believe it is possible only though the use of affiliate programs that you can you generate visitors of that size so quickly.

How long has the site been up? Where did you get the traffic from? Partnering sites? Search Engines?

Let’s be fair. Let’s wait to see how he/she (sorry) got this traffic so quickly. I am more then interested if this sort of traffic is possible so quickly. But I don’t buy that it is “because this subject is so popular”. There has to be more.

[and in another response]

You are listed on topwebgames.com, which means that they are getting approximately less then 1,000 unique visitors a day. Assume half of that is sent to you (which is more then generous), that is still only 500 uniques a day. Where is the rest of the traffic coming from? Alexa shows tomwebgames as 173,814, and I have personal sites well over 30,000 that get less visitors then you are claiming.

Let us hear the truth, or don’t talk about traffic you wish for. We all wish for lots of traffic, but it never hits the expatiations that we have.
