If you cannot afford say like between a $8-$12/per month reseller hosting plan, maybe this isn't the right business for you to get into.

Based on your requirements it looks like you're looking for an Affiliate program instead of a Reseller program. With an Affiliate program you don't have to pay anything and you will get paid by commission for every customer you refer. Most hosting company's do offer this...

Don't do it if you can't afford it, period.

Jason probably hit it on the mark with the affiliate program - but that won't make you own the company, you are basically an affiliate sales person.

Yeah, you're not going to find a reseller plan that comes pre-loaded with paying customers...

but that won't make you own the company, you are basically an affiliate sales person. With a zero cost or fixed cost reseller account (such as Godaddy's) you're still a sales person, and you typically have very little control over your business, package size, features, etc. Selling the business won't be a real option either, and isn't likely to yield much anyway.

The main advantages of resellerspanel/godaddy style reselling are the recurrent income and low entry costs.

There are a few avenues to getting a non-upfront reseller account from Reseller Club.
Some hosts that supply WHMCS give you a free account, you simply fund what you need, and go from there.
I've been using them more an more for some of my small clients, everything works great so far. A little bit of a clumsy interface, but a lot of control once you get used to it.

He should be expecting some pretty decent amount of cash, if not go with a turnkey reseller like InnoHosting to start, which should probably save him some money on other resources like support.

Affiliates are great. I would recommend you find the right one. Most host have them if they use WHMCS(its built it)

I agree with the ones who suggest afilliates, that would be the best method to go down.

I would say definately don't get a reseller package and try to start a web host company if you can't even afford that much. To start a business in any industry you need to have funds you can throw around.
