Darth 11-07-2002, 11:20 AM CDRW, cheap and reliable :) STX-Hosting 11-07-2002, 11:26 AM id like to see you backup a 40gb hard drive onto cdr's ;] DVDRW for up to 20gb ish. Anything above that then getting a 2nd hard drive is usually the best option. If your talking about web hosting backup then ask your provider, they should do backups at least once a week. okihost 11-07-2002, 11:28 AM If you can get a DLT drive I personally think is the best solution. What control panel are you running? terrastudios 11-07-2002, 11:29 AM hmmmmmm 3x 60gb disks == 60 * 1024 = 61440mb / 700 = 87.771428571428571428571428571429 cdrs worth of data ok, ...goes and buys shares in all the major cdr firms....., this is the best way of backing up everyone go buy ur blank cds :P :P @ darthy Darth 11-07-2002, 11:32 AM If only it was true Matt. :p @ TS ;) ThomasC 11-07-2002, 11:32 AM :D terrastudios 11-07-2002, 11:35 AM . terrastudios 11-07-2002, 11:37 AM anyways this thread is getting outa topic, back to the original 'whats the best backup method' Darth 11-07-2002, 11:39 AM Thats not very professional Matt ;). I don't want to tell everybody how awful you are ;) remember, I keep msn logs :D terrastudios 11-07-2002, 11:40 AM dont get me started :bawling: ...screams for his chicken to come and sort darth out akashik 11-07-2002, 01:05 PM stay on topic... daveww, It's personal choice to an extent but we prefer to rsync to a seperate dedicated server, than the one the original data is on, and do it daily, using a perl script we had programmed Even in the event of a server bursting into flames in the rack, data is still preserved. :) Greg Moore rey 11-07-2002, 01:19 PM I second Greg Moore. Backing up to other server is the best. It's a lot more reliable and much faster than DLT. Also, RAID-1/5/0+1/10 is also a good thing. It's the first defense against harddisk failure. okihost 11-07-2002, 01:19 PM We do the same as above but with a script we got from http://ensim.globalreseller.com for Ensim. It basically backups up to another server so server 1 backs up to server 2 server 3 to server 4 and vice versa. Even if your dedicated provider offers "daily backups" of all there servers I have found sometimes they *** a little.. the only backup you really will ever know if effective is the one that you do yourself and test. sonichost 11-07-2002, 01:22 PM We do the same as above but with a script we got from http://ensim.globalreseller.com for Ensim. That script is the best thing since the tbone steak! It's excellent and well worth the $$. We use that on all of our Ensim machines and on CPanel we do daily backups to a 2nd drive. zerphyte 11-07-2002, 01:57 PM We backup clients 120GB drives on CDR's. We have backup software that makes it just like windows. Start with a new machine stick the cds in swap when it says stick cd # in. okihost 11-07-2002, 02:30 PM Originally posted by zerphyte We backup clients 120GB drives on CDR's. Sounds quite time consuming. ho247 11-07-2002, 02:33 PM We use rsync (http://samba.anu.edu.au/rsync/) to backup all our servers to a remote backup server... works great and also saves on bandwidth. But the question asked covers quite a large general area. Do you want to know the best backup solution for dedicated servers that are remotely hosted, or is it for data stored on your local computer? Alan Well, we currently backup locally & remotely on a monthly basis. This is done manually which is very time consuming. I guess Im just looking for a quick, easy & reliable solution. Is there such a thing? We are using NT so the Linux solutions will not work. smidwap 11-07-2002, 02:56 PM Originally posted by daveww Well, we currently backup locally & remotely on a monthly basis. If I were you, I would start backing up a little more frequently than a month. Then again, if you are doing it manually, maybe once a month is hard enough. :( Are you looking to backup the data into a .tar.gz file?
