Use your sig file and involve yourself in webmaster/hosting related forums and newsgroups.

Local advertising is very effective and usually cheaper than online.
The best way is by word of mouth; treat your first few customers exceptionally well and they will tell their friends etc.
For the game servers try announcing your service to the big gaming sites; they might mention you in their news - this was what I did when I ran a gaming server company.

Hello. If you have enough money, you might want to get a showcase on websites such as www.hostsearch.com And as it was mentioned before, the most useful advertisment is on local level. You might want to try faxing local companies.
Anyway, Good Luck :)

Wouldn't recommend this. You should stay away from advertising tactics that waste your consumer group's time and/or money (ie, no SPAM email or faxes). Go door to door locally and ask politely to speak to someone who is responsible for such decisions. Have a BRIEF 1-2 minute spiel outline your services ready. Then hand him a business card and let him know where he can reach you to set up an appointment for more information. This is VERY effective and you will gain a few loyal customers that will spread your company's name.

hahaahhahaahhaahahaha
door to door hosting services? Good luck with that.
Also unsolicited faxes are illegal anywhere in the united states. Your not ALLOWED to send random faxes to fax machines.
Television/Radio are horrible and are only good for brand recognition (for the most part) and are expensive. I really really recommend hosting showcases and ads in the local computer flyers.
Just spending money on local advertising is retarded and a waste of your hard earned money since it won't be targeted. While some hosting directories may seem expensive up front they have have turn around for the money and are EXTREMELY targeted.
If your site is ugly or you don't offer anything compelling then its better to invest money into paying a design firm (i haven't seen your site, this is just in general) nothing is worse then getting an ad url and checking it out to see a *hithole of a website.

Also never take ADVICE from people in the same business who could compete for your customers. IE webhostingtalk.

Not literrally door to door(and not to residential doors), but if your town/city has an area where there are a lot of small businesses, go there. It works pretty good (yes I've tried it)

That's an overgeneralization...I think if you search the forums you'll find that my posts and other people's (Aussie's sig tip is a great idea! :agree: ) on this topic have been helpful - others will agree. WHT is a place where hosts/customers come together to help each other...
edit: on the same note, you've just contradicted yourself. you give advice (a couple good tips in there), and then say not to listen to you....

Our company started 7 years ago as a web design, web consulting, web advertising type of business....The majority of our business comes from local businesses, all generated by local sales reps who go door to door...each and every day calling on accounts...
Two years ago we started doing web hosting, and to this day we still depend on our outside sales force to generate a good deal of our business....
If we depended on places such as WHT for business, we would not be in business any longer. The only way to get business on here is to give it away at a loss, which we won't do.

Spam is the fastest way to killing your biz ... forget about it. I recommend that you list yourself in hosting directories, buy some PPC listings, buy some CPC banners or text links, etc.
Basically you'll need to spend some marketing dollars to bring in the traffic.
Or go to some popular webmaster site and offer to host their site free .. in exchange for ads on their site ;)
