View Full Version : Purchasing multiple extentions

I have a .com that redirects to my eBay store. Now that I want to do my own website (haven't started yet), I'd like to use that domain as my prime domain but also purchase the .net, .org, and .biz so they will all direct to my .com

Is it possible and how would I do this? Where would you suggest I purchase them from at a reasonable cost and a safe site? Would I just do it thru the web host I plan on going with?

Thanks in advance.

If you go with a cPanel host, just add the extra domains to your account has parked domains. This will forward them to your main domain. A great place to purchase domains is GoDaddy and Name.com. Buying them from your webhost is also a good option. Best of Luck!

If you are using eBay Web Store on eBay's server, you can get a domain name registrar or provider that allows you to redirect your website to the webpage.

If you are self-hosting the website, you can add it as a parked domain.

Yes, it is possible

You can either do it from your domain registrar or the webhosting provider, depending on who gives you this facility. There are some who charge for this and few are free.

Godaddy gets very mixed reviews (I certainly wouldn't call them "great").

Don't buy your domains from your hosting company - buy them separately. Allowing your hosting company to have control of your domains is never a good idea because this makes it a lot more difficult to move away if you're not happy with the service. Keep registration and hosting separate. Always.

Thanks everyone!

Lubeca, so I just stay with the domain host I'm with and just point my nameservers over to my website host? Sorry I sound so website illiterate...I am. :) And if I want to go with GoDaddy, or elsewhere, I would do the same, correct? Just buy the domains and point them to my web host?

Thanks....again.

:)

Yes, that's basically correct. There are two things you need to do, one with your registrar, one with your hosting company...:

- in your registrar control panel set the name servers to be those of your hosting company
- in your hosting control panel add the domain(s) to your account (making sure that you add them for hosting only, without transferring the registration to the hosting company)

Thanks again, Lubeca.

I appreciate the advice! :)

Tucows is a good registrar too. I find them easy to add private name servers, etc.

Agreed. However, you can not purchase a OpenSRS (TuCows) domain unless you go through one of their many resellers and or get a reseller account.

Agreed. ... or get a reseller account.

got one, I was going through ipower. But then they changed allot of things

1) Kept forcing me to change password (like every 2 days, saying it was not secure enough)

2) charging me for domain privacy, when I bought the domain it was free (and is free through tucows).

3) Having problems 'push'ing my domains to my reseller account.

4) once pushed they are still charging me for domain privacy, even though tey do not control the domains any more. AND NOT refunding the charged amount.

This may not be the place to gripe, but I did. :(

A real good reason NOT to register throught your hosting company.

How do I point my nameservers from my domain host to my web host? Do I just change them in my site control or do I need an authorization code, permission, etc? Guess what I'm asking is if I can just do it myself in a couple steps or is it difficult? I'm learning but not that far yet. LOL Please give me the steps if anyone has the time. Thanks a bunch!

P.S. Lubeca answered this on the most part but I need a little more detail. Sorry.

The pointing is done through the registrar, but you may then need to park the domain on one of your domains.

So here's what I think you're saying:

Sign up with a Web Host
Go to my domain host (Hostway)
Change the nameservers from Hostway to point to new Web Host
Then I'm done?

Why would I have to park the domain?

I ask the question about why to park the domain cuz I'm not too sure what it means. Isn't it just a domain that's owned but not being used? I do want to use my domain...just point it to a different web host. Sorry if I'm confusing anyone. :( I don't mean to be.

It is possible and you can register additional extensions at most registrars, GoDaddy would probably end up cheapest with the right coupons.
