View Full Version : Cpanel and plan servers
tenshigirl 11-06-2002, 09:38 PM I have a few questions.
If I get a plain dedicated server and it's Redhat Linux 8.0, that already included all these right:
gcc 3.2
glibc 2.2.93
kernel 2.4.18
Web server powered by Apache HTTP Server 2.0
CUPS 1.1.15
GNU Emacs 21.2
Ximian Evolution 1.0.8
GIMP 1.2.3
GNOME 2.0
GNOME Meeting 0.93.1
gphoto2 2.1.0
KDE 3.0.3
MrProject 0.6
Mozilla 1.0.1
Postfix 1.1.11
Perl 5.8.0
XFree86 4.2.0
So what's left for me to install is mysql and php? Then what if I install Cpanel onto the server, would that give me Mysql and php or would I still have to install them myself?
Can anyone help? Also, I've contacted some people about installing cpanel for me and I haven't gotten any replies. If you're willing to do it, will I get support for cpanel too or not?
Thanks!
ckpeter 11-06-2002, 09:40 PM Cpanel will install mysql and php for you (if I remember correctly).
As for cpanel support - you usually get help from your license provider.

smidwap 11-06-2002, 09:41 PM I believe when installing cPanel/WHM, the tools it supports will also be installed. I'm not sure about this, so you better get a sure source before making a decisions. ;)
As for installing cPanel for you, post in the 'Job Offers and Requests' forum to get replies on who can help you with the installation.

The license providor may provide support for cPanel, but not free installation. So, tenshigirl, do look into what services your providor offers when you purchase a cPanel license (assuming you purchase a cPanel license separate from the dedicated/colocated server).
ckpeter 11-06-2002, 09:46 PM The installation of cpanel is really easy. Basically, you log into the server, download (by using "wget") the cpanel installer from cpanel.net, and run the installer. It will take care of everything for you. The only downside is that it usually takes a long time to install. (could be more than an hour).
If you want to pay someone to run a few commands for you, you can certainly ask for help in the Job Offer forum. However, there are a lot of license providers who will install for you for free.

Hmm... you plan on running remote X sessions to that server? Seems A LOT of that software you list is GUI-based.
ckpeter 11-06-2002, 09:54 PM It seems that she has take the list from another website (probably redhat's official site). That would explain the list of GUI software.

What do you mean? I don't get this. and what is GUI-based? Anyone?
Are intel celeron dedicated servers okay to get? If not, why? thanks!
Edit for this: I did took it off of redhat's site.
Andrew 11-06-2002, 10:26 PM GUI = graphic user interface
Gnome and KDE and lots of the things you listed aren't used at all on a dedicated server. They are used for desktop workstations and you would be administrating your server via shell.
Celerons are okay. Low end, but okay. Depends on what you're doing. :)
tenshigirl,
Having read your posts, I would like to suggest that you get a fully managed dedicated server, if you must go dedicated. Otherwise, a reseller account may be more suitable for you.
Just some advice! :)

Most of those programs you listed all deal with a GUI (Graphical User Interface), you know, what you see in Windows... all the pretty icons and colors ;)
What made you think you needed that software?
Angel78 11-07-2002, 11:15 AM so cpanel installs MySQl and PHP, to come back to the topic? ( i was thinking that you have to install it by your self)
ckpeter 11-07-2002, 01:45 PM Yes, cpanel installs MySQL and PHP for you. (at least it did the last few times I installed it). Although PHP should have come with your system already (redhat).
