View Full Version : Windows Hosting & Microsoft Licencing
wlandman 11-06-2002, 07:25 PM Hey Guys,
Say we were to rollout hosting using Windows 2000 in say a month. I was wondering the following things.
1. How many licenses would we need for Windows 2000, and MS SQL Server 2000?
2. Is there any package like a Web Hosting Package allowing web hosting companies to purchase it at a cheaper price?
I'd love to find the lowest possible entry into the Windows Hosting market without reselling someone else.
okihost 11-06-2002, 07:42 PM Yes you can look for a dedicated server somewhere that offers WIN2k and they will charge you a monthly fee the same way you pay say if you were using Cpanel. As for pricing I have no clue on that one.. You could also co-lo a box somewhere with your own license.
wlandman 11-06-2002, 07:55 PM I was hoping Microsoft woudl have a package you could buy thats all integrated together. Dedicating a server or colo'ing a box is kind of out of the quesiton because it takes the control away from us. But maybe having a dedicated server is something we might consider...
P.S: OKIHost how much are you charging for that space there?

I was looking for a lifetime unlimited space/bandwidth account but for you I will be happy with 8TB of space and 10000GB of bandwidth for the next 25 years. :D Oh and I need to host some illegal DVD's and MP3's and run an unlicensed copy of vB if you dont mind.
Back OT.. You might just for the heck of it make a request in the hosting requests forum and you might get some better feedback I know there are a few dedicated providers floating around here that off Win boxes.

rusko 11-06-2002, 11:23 PM you can always p1r4t3 m$ software [tongue firmly in cheek] that, or try buying licenses off of ebay - they are usually rather cheap there.
vhedesigns 11-07-2002, 01:06 AM When you want to get licensing for web hosting on MS products be sure to processor versions. IE a two processor machine needs a two processor license. Much cheeper then buying user licenses...
vhedesigns 11-07-2002, 01:07 AM Looking for an example on eBay now....

Microsoft has a Windows Web Hoster program, which gives you a copy of Win2K Adv Server, with license, along with several other goodies for Hosting Companies, to use on a production box within 90 days. There are several more requirements, but they are easy to meet. Check their site for more info....you will still need to colocate, but this reduces the entry cost in to Windows hosting.
vhedesigns 11-07-2002, 01:11 AM Couldn't find one on eBay but heres an example from CDW

vhedesigns 11-07-2002, 01:26 AM Yeah for some reason eBay.com wouldn't resolve for me...
ThomasC 11-07-2002, 04:17 AM Rusko,
Why tell me? i never asked that question, i never asked any question, please edit your post to the person who asked the question or something.
rusko 11-07-2002, 11:20 AM thomas,

RH Robert 11-07-2002, 04:42 PM I wasn't sure if it was or not. That was how we started out adding Windows hosting to our offerings, by colocating boxes. It's too bad, but I can see the potential for abuse by people with no intention of using it for it's intended purpose. Oh well, I tried.
But there is still a lot of info here (http://www.microsoft.com/serviceproviders/webhosting/tech_resources.asp)
vhedesigns 11-07-2002, 04:59 PM Not sure if the exact program is still there. But there are many different programs listed:
