I'm looking for a web host directory where I can specify my requirements in excruciating detail.

I've been using http://www.webhostdir.com but keep coming up with limited results (could be the directory, could be I'm too picky). Does anybody know of any others?

The type of search I am talking about is at http://www.webhostdir.com/hostsearch/search.asp?SearchType=Advanced (note: it doesn't seem to work well in Netscape)

Almost all Webhosting directories are fake. All the recomendations they show you are sponsered by the hosts themselves! You'll never find anything credible on a webhosting directory, IMO.

Your best bet would be to do your research here on WHT, (although at times, WHT hasn't been too credible either...:D)

Yes, you could use the "requests" forum here at WHT to post exact details and get responses from hosts. The forum can be cluttered with plain-old cheap hosts, but you can always give it a shot. Just remember one important thing: don't always go for the cheapest hosts, go for the best (in terms of quality)! :stickout:

There are plenty of web hosting directories that are not "fake".
FindMyHosting.com is a very nice directory, and will probably suit your needs, as I'm assuming "fake" means they have advertisements on them.

I don't understand why people feel that ads on hosting directories is so misleading. I agree some directories go over board with the Top Host's stuff, but not all do.

Well the fake claim could be made around a year or so ago. When webhosting companies put themselves as number one buy paying off these listings (cough I still remember seeing ***** at number one)

Maybe its a bug in Netscape. If you have IE you could give it a try.
I did just try the advanced search at webhostdir using Netscape 7 and it didnt provide results, whereas IE did.
You might post in the forums over there, as the employees DO participate.

I would also advise you to search for the hosting company in forums. www.findsp.com - might be what you need. Anyway, Good Luck:)

Thank you for all the feedback on the webhostdir.com search engine. We are aware of some browser compatibility issues and are currently developing a solution. A new and improved search engine will be released in the coming weeks.

Like most search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN) we do carry a few sponsored companies but it is a very very very low number of sponsored listings. Our Search Results are most certainly not fake and are not advertising dollars influenced.

Thanks, I'll report it. But it might also be that the site is using proprietary IE code which wouldn't work in any other browser.

Just because a hosting directory is sponsored by advertisers does not mean that it is fake or not credible. The hostdir business is very competive, just like hosting, so most all of us work pretty hard to come up with new and useful tools to help people make wise choices. If you click an advertiser while using the tools.. then GOOD! That's why we put them there.

And just curious - do you think overture is a credible search tool?

I may be wrong - but I believe those are just visits through their system - perhaps just using that alexa toolbar thing.

In truth - tophosts.com which takes supposedly over 500,000 visitors per month would be a significantly different number than say webhostdir.com that takes supposedly 75,000. Shouldn't the numbers between them be different?

So - those figures are based on alexa toolbar users only it appears. Not very accurate.

Alexa is suprisingly accurate as a comparison tool - of course the numbers are only to compare relatively.

I doubt TopHosts gets 500,000 visits a month. They may have brand name but the average joe web hosting seeker doesn't type in Tophosts.com - they go to google or Yahoo or MSN and do a search. TopHosts has a good presence on MSN but limited on other engines - sure they get lots of traffic but - 500,000 / month is fantasy land.

So you are saying that Alexa is a true sampling of internet traffic? I'm asking around and am finding few people that have even heard of it.
