View Full Version : what all goes into being a reseller
beach surfer98 11-05-2002, 01:41 AM im been thinking about being reseller and seriously want to get into this buiness...
at first, before i did some research , i just thought you leased some space on the internet to many people and kicked back and relax while the checks come in monthly.. but slowly im learning their is more to it..
greatbeast 11-05-2002, 03:15 PM Basically you would be dealing with everything except the server and net connection. While leaves (someone remind me if I miss something.)
Technical support, webdesign/maintenance, billing, accounting, sales, advertising, legal questions, as well as general business management.
So you wont be taking too much out of the picture as a reseller VS owning your own stuff. Just add Network administration, hardware/software maintenance to the mix.

Yup. It's critical to realize that, whether you're a reseller or running your own servers, you *are* running a real business with, hopefully, real customers who expect real business-quality service and customer care. In fact, keeping your customers' needs and interests a top priority is a must if you hope to make a go of any kind of business.
If you're really interested in becoming a Web host -- handling all the business responsibilities, taking care of your customers and dealing with all the headaches, as well as the rewards -- I'd definitely encourage you to keep doing more research into every aspect of the hosting business. Become a regular at this and other hosting forums, do a lot of reading, ask a lot of questions, and create a viable plan before you get started. You probably won't get rich quick, but you can build the foundation for a decent, profitable business that way.
Best of luck!
multient 11-05-2002, 06:13 PM Yes I agree with Shirley.
Running a web business, isn't a get rich quick scheme, or an easy money trick.
Its just like any business where you must plan and do all the key points etc. Fundamentals are the same as any business and naturally the chance of success is subject many factors in the business world.
I wish you luck, do you research and plan thoroughly!
beach surfer98 11-05-2002, 08:52 PM do i reall REALLY need a business linesce... and do i really really REALLY have to report the money i make...
what happens if i don't??
oh and btw greatbeast.. i won't have to worry about billing.. cuz 2checkout.com does that right..
multient 11-05-2002, 09:03 PM Yes you still need to be properly registered and pay / declare all earnings with your tax department as per the rules in your local area.
If you are not familiar will all these steps, I suggest you speak to a family / friend who currently runs a business to help you structure these important parts.
You can't commence you business until all the foundation paper work has been undertaken. Expert advice I suggest you get.
beach surfer98 11-05-2002, 09:32 PM ok.. i can get a buiness liensce.. cuz i know a guy with his own furniture buiness and he can help me with that.. but what about reporting my earnings for tax reasons?? what if im only making 100 bux a month out of this.. do i still have to report it??? ive never done my taxes... im still living with my parents and going to college.. so i don't know how all tax stuff works.. i don't want to tell my parents about all this cuz they will stop me .. they will think this is to much work and ask me why the hell im doing this..

Well then, here's an idea: Sell Lemonade! It requires pretty much the same amount of effort a webhosting company requires...!
*sarcasm*
peersignal 11-05-2002, 10:07 PM Well, if you only make $100 a month from it, you just list as you normally would at tax time as personal. Because I believe the IRS says if you make under $10,000 a year from a business, it's not to get taxed like a business, just taxed on an individual work/income level.
Rad1W 11-06-2002, 03:14 AM You know something. I went through the same problem.. I started off a web design and hosting company thinking that it does not need to be registered. sooner, I found out that to start a business, NO MATTER WHAT, it HAS to be registered. After I heard all that, I closed my "Company" down.
Anyway, how much does it cost to register a company? are there any monthly fees or just a small one time fee?
And you know what? I'm like macielter...I'm just a student...I heard I have to be over 21 to register a company.
peersignal 11-06-2002, 10:47 AM You have to be 18 to start a business. And I should have clairified...you still have to list it as a business, but if you make under a certain amount from that business then you don't have to pay higher business taxes, depending on if you're a sole proprietoror LLC,etc. Yes, you have to register a business in your local county.

Then, reselling may really not be for you, unless you resell to your buddies only. I don't mean that in a sarcastic or condescending way, it's just that if it's your friends, the dealing with them might be easier.
Reselling asks a LOT of dedication and time. It's not a hobby, it's a full-time job. You have to keep on top of EVERYTHING: if the server goes down, you need to find why it did (trust me, some reselling companies out there won't communicate with you when their servers go down, so what do you tell YOUR customers if you only rely on that?), explain it to your customers, keep them happy, deal with their support problems - which entails you spend a LOT of time researching on support matters so you can reply quicker to their enquiries...
Then, you have to deal with those customers who want everything done yesterday, while paying very minimal fees, who expect you to do everything for them (not all clients are like that, mind you - but you soon find out they exist!), etc. You need to have a head for business to come out on top also.
Really, if you only want a hobby to make pocket money, find something else - because this is really not gonna make you happy.
Best of luck in your decisions nonetheless.
