Sony
TDK
Teac
Toshiba IT Products
Yamaha
Please only recommend your choice from the list above. :) I'd apreciate all quick replies.
Phrozen 11-04-2002, 03:45 PM Plextor is definately teh best.
HighLineHost 11-04-2002, 04:02 PM We have all Plextor I dont think it has ever made a Bad CD, 2nd choice would be Yahama .. Hope this helps...
JBIZ718 11-04-2002, 04:18 PM I would go with TDK and VeloCD technology.
There cheap and good.
Get one for about 109 + $40 mail in rebate.

TowerHost 11-04-2002, 04:45 PM I've been using an LG 16x10xsomething and it works great.
I think you can pick it up for around $100 Canadian now! I can't believe how cheap CDRW drives are now, I bought an old Iomega Internal burner 4x a few years ago for $350 LOL :D
Whatever you get make sure it has burnproof and at least 2 mb of memory and you'll smoke!
AmericanD 11-04-2002, 04:51 PM oh my . i need a CD burner too.. should i buy now or wait for the thanksgiving holidays? i might as well buy a dvd burner ? watcha guys say?
Axel Teflon 11-04-2002, 05:02 PM I'm not worried about the price right now, I just want to know the best make from the above choices!
Is Samsung any good?
AmericanD 11-04-2002, 05:36 PM I just bought one Plextor cdrw/dvd combo . hopefully its good
madmouser 11-04-2002, 05:39 PM Go with Yamaha or Plextor. I've got an older Yamaha (CRW4416, external SCSI) that hasn't made a coaster yet. Never had another CD player -- PC or Mac -- fail to read a CD made on it and I send them all over with graphic design stuff. It's slow and ugly but sure gets the job done.
Plextors have an excellent reputation, too.
Acronym BOY 11-04-2002, 05:47 PM I jst bought a BusLink 40x CDR, which is really just a re-badged LiteOn. And of course the 40x can be upgraded to a 48x by a firmware swap.
So I have a $30 48x LiteOn that is often rebadged as a LG, BusLink, Iomega, or Sony.
Ive had Plextor drives, back in the day (4x and so) they were good SCSI models, but now the difference is neglidgable. And even if my drive does crap out, I can still buy a second for less than it would have cost to get the Plextor in the first place.
progex 11-04-2002, 05:52 PM Lite-ON
Lite-On. Period.
Not only are they often rebadged at a cheaper price, but they can easily be hacked and upgraded. ;)

as a cd burner? I hear they're pretty good. My dvd-rom is a Samsung (Model SD-616) and the reviews classed it as one of the best on the market. Oddly it was far from the most expensive either.
For a cd burner I have a Sony 24x10x40 coupled with Nero. As long as you're away of the 'speed' of the blanks it's an excellent combination. Whether it's cd-r or cd-rw I've *never* burnt a bad disk with it, and that's even burning on the fly from one cd to another while checking e-mail. :)
For blanks I use Sony for RW and TDK for CD-R.

viGeek 11-04-2002, 06:29 PM I prefer CyberDrive, but you do not have them listed. They aim towards the budget minded users, however I have built several computers utilizing a CyberDrive CDRW, and have never had problems on my end, or friends end.
prelude785 11-04-2002, 07:29 PM I'm using a sony cd burner and haven't had even a single problem with it so far. Been about 1 1/2 year.
Acroplex 11-04-2002, 08:46 PM LiteOn LTR-48125W (48x12x48)
Nothing beats this one. Excellent price and quality/speed. Check it out on NewEgg.com
web docta 11-05-2002, 12:01 AM I've got a Plextor, but Lite-on makes a very good, cost effective unit. I would probably buy a Lite-On if I needed one today.
BTW, prices on DVD-RW's are coming down and you might want to consider that in the near future.
Axel Teflon 11-05-2002, 03:31 PM Im currently looking at a Plextor PlexWriter 40r 40w 12rw Int IDE Retail. (Model PX-W4012TA)
All these numbers are confusing me, but I've been told its good. I've got some info on it:
The PlexWriter 40/12/40 E-IDE (ATAPI) drive is the leader in its class with blazing recording and rewrite speed. Recording at 40X speed, the new drive is capable of burning a CD in just over three minutes. Features like BURN-Proof and PoweRec-II ensure maximum quality and data integrity. Mean Time Before Failure is 60,000 hour(s).
Anybody got any last comments or suggestions?
