View Full Version : New to Hosting - Some Help Required
HostingChef 05-24-2009, 02:40 AM I'm new to hosting, looking forward to start a reseller hosting. After going through various threads found that reseller hosting with end user support will fit my limited knowledge. I'm putting a monthly budget of around $25.00
Looking forward know few things.
What all are other expense involved other than hosting fee, like setting up site with some nice landing page and content, how much it cost average, even found some companies provide private label site along with plan. Is it good idea to start with private label with hosting package?
I hope through reseller hosting, one can sell only shared hosting/email/domains. How I can sell other hosting programs like vps/dedicated etc (directly or affiliate)
Also direct end user support by company then there is any chance of loosing client/customers later to them
As a beginner I better to choose with a basic plan then upgrade to further depends on no of customer of getting?, upgrading is easy or not.
Also found here, few are moving from one provider to other due to services reasons, does moving from one company to other easy or not?
Support appreciated
Thanks

If many resold accounts host under your reseller hosting when moving to another company will be very hard. Because you can move all of the resold accounts seperately only(so you cannot get backup of all resold accounts as one file on reseller hosting).
So you must choose a reliable reseller hosting provider. You can find them by reading reviews on WHT. I recommend Hostdime or Surpasshosting(for fast support, good uptime, rich features and reliable service). Good luck.

I think you should focus on resell hosting first.
For VPS/dedicated, some companies offer discount for reseller and you can mark up price with addon service.
End user support can never be as good as your own support because you don't interact with your customers and might not understand what they need.
KMyers 05-24-2009, 01:19 PM Also I would advise you do your own customer support. That way you can directly control the quality of your customer service
AquariusStorage 05-24-2009, 02:24 PM I think you need to do some more research before entering the hosting market, especially before considering VPS and Dedicated hosting, a LOT more.
You may be able to get away with doing simple shared/reseller hosting with the knowledge you have. The reason I say this is you wont have to worry about managing the server, your provider will.
I also firmly believe that you should do your own support as well. Good 3rd party support is going to be VERY expensive, hundreds of $$. If you do your own support, you can keep the money yourself. Maybe go with a provider which offers flash tutorials, ect.
Obviously go with cPanel since it is the most widely supported and well known cPanel.
You're looking at about 10$ month to start out for a standard reseller hosting account.
HostingChef 05-26-2009, 01:48 AM Thanks for all the supports. I don’t want to jump into reseller hosting immediately. First I’m planning to spend month or two here and other forums to learn the various options available then only register for any reseller program.
I don’t have any plan to provide vps hosting more than that don’t much knowledge about that, just for confirmation does it come along with reseller hosting as an addon service for making some extra $$.
About end user support, more than making customer relation, those companies providing end user support, minimum make sure my customers get technical support. Currently I having limitation on providing 24/7 cs. Also sometimes I remain in travel or other reasons not accessing net frequently then it will create major problem later. So what I’m looking forward is start with a company providing end user support and later move to other provider or start providing support from my side.
Also can provide some information about does it good idea to start the site using any private label templates or develop a site from scratch (how much cost normally).
Thanks

It really depends on each vendor, but if you want to start from scratch, $1k is at least for web and content.
Is it good idea to start with private label with hosting package?
No trouble at all with it.
How I can sell other hosting programs like vps/dedicated etc (directly or affiliate)
Directly, you will need to have your owned hardware. Or you can resell for your vendors, or affiliate of course.
Also direct end user support by company then there is any chance of loosing client/customers later to them
No, a good vendor will not steal customers from you. Of course, customers have freedom to choose, but if they signup with you, you have reasons for them to sign-up, is that correct?
upgrading is easy or not.
No downtime at all for you to upgrade from small plan to bigger one. From shared environment to VPS or dedicated IP, might be some small downtime, but very small, if your host can control their IPs
does moving from one company to other easy or not?
It depends on each vendor. Usually, the new vendor can help.
