Bare in mind Telstra is Australias largest and one of the worlds most profitable Telco's.

Also bare in mind those prices are basically divided by 2 to get US$$'s

Telstra turn over approx 20 Billion AUD per annum ($10 billion US) and make a very healthy profit.

Telstra is owned by the australian government.
and the australian government wont let any other ISP's/Telecom services run in australia, there is Optus, and a few other orgs which are all forced to resell Telstra. if anyone says anything different you are WRONG, i use to work for OPTUS & AAPT, and i also have a friend working for telstra which iv known for over 10 years.,
they own everything and they force the australian people to pay 10 times more then what they should.
if you ask me, it is a disgrace that the australian government is scamming the australians for 20billion dollars!.

i am an australian and i buy quality bandwidth from americans.
almost 100 times cheaper. it would cost me $3000/Month to have a 3Mbs (t1 in australia)
for $2000 australian i can rent a 100mbs cogent in usa.

so, does anyone know any ISP/Hosting org worse then telstra?
$198/month australian for 2gig transfer (with telstra)
$100/month usd for 2gig transfer (with telstra)

No, but close on their heels is www.webcentral.com.au :)

Plan: Economy 2002

20MB of allocated storage
500MB of data transfer from the site each month

AUD$64 set-up fee

AUD$38 per month or
AUD$420 per year

5. If the amount of data transferred from your site exceeds the allocated amount per month, a fee of 13.2 cents per extra MB is charged.
6. If the amount of data stored on your web site exceeds the allocated amount per month, a fee of AUD$0.44 per extra MB is charged.

1000s' are and when you try to bid for some heavy corporate site hosting quoting $90/mnth for 1gb disc and 10gb transfers they don't look at you because you're too cheap.

One Newspaper I quoted are paying telstra $800/mnth...ie the Basic 198/mnth plus $55 per mySql database, $11 per subdomain, $5 per additional email and 10c/mb additional bandwidth [over2gb] PER MONTH and they reckon they're getting special rates:eek:

To cap it off our Government wants to sell off the remaining 51% of Telstra...imagine the hosting prices if they become fully privately owned:rolleyes:

Hah...

Every person in Australia knows who that is.. Webhosting, ISP (cable, dialup, adsl, you name it), telephone services, etc.!

As it has been said - they are the biggest in Australia.. infact, I use their 3gb cable plan for my net access

so do i.

do we have much choice as aussies tho?
telstra owning optus's network and they are both 3gig.
options are limited, which is exactly why telstra is so rich (aka the gov),
they control they australians communication methods
and force them to pay alot for it.

be good for all the aussies if an american company with alot of money could invest in australian internet services and start some competition.

Telstra, has UN-USED fibre optic in the ground, ACROSS the country.
but charges 18cents/MB
$4.3 Billion PROFIT last year

They simply do not care, thats the problem with monopolies.
We have no alternative.

I can only hope a savoir will emerge and save us from this tyranny.

At my house I can see the CBD, its only 8km (5 miles) away.
Yet my dialup is at 19,200bps because of pair gain systems in the local loop.

I can only pray for the poor souls who live on the other side of the hill.

Maybe I should start a revolution.

Tesltra have screwed over plenty of people in Australia.

www.telstraexposed.com has been set up by a group of people to publicise and fight some of the excesses of Telstra.

Their website makes very interesting reading if you have some time to spare.

Telstra hosting helpdesk is great too. Wanted some information for a client, and it took 6 days to get an automatic response saying they were looking into the problem.

Teltra bashing (along with bank bashing) has long been Australia's defacto national sport.

Telstra (and a couple of other big hosting companies in Oz) have also got another rort.

They charge $160 per year for "Domain Name Hosting"
This is their fee for having a domain name connected to their nameservers.

Yes I know that this is garbage, but hey, they're dealing with people who don't have a clue what is a legitimate charge or not.

Oh, by the way. If you want database facilities, they charge an additional $330 setup and $55 per month for access to Microsoft SQL server
And if you want SSL, they charge $55 setup, and another $55 per month on top of your hosting fees.

Rip off - You bet!

Do your best,
Eric G.
