View Full Version : What OS is better for my dedicated server?

I`m gonna get dedicated server for my website which is Free File Sharing service, what operating system is good to start and if possible continue of course among Open Sources like Red Hat, Cent OS, ....

I use on all my servers CentOS 5.3, i like this distro, is so easly to administrate and is so stable too :)

+1 CentOS there is a ton of info on the web for securing your server and most of the control panels work great with it.

Another vote for CentOS :) But you should also check with the software you are using, such as if you are getting a control panel, you should check which OS it's most compatible with.

About 6 months ago I was starting up a new project which required a web server, just for local use. My hosting was in the background, I wasn't really caring about it at the time as it 'just worked' and I didn't know what OS it was on as I didn't have SSh access. (Things change in a short amount of time!)

Anyway, long story short.. after all my research I decided upon CentOS. Then I found out CentOS had become pretty much the hosting OS. Could've saved myself some time by coming here first!

I run all CentOS (both 5.2 and 5.3) and Ubuntu LTS. CentOS is much better for your typically LAMP stack, but I prefer Ubuntu for running game servers.

our vote for CentOS..
