We already knew that :D I suppose that's what comes of turning drinking into a social religion.

Wolf Blass Winery has been chosen as the Best Winemaker in the World at the world’s most prestigious wine and spirit competition, announced last night in London.

The 2002 International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) Presentation Banquet in London voted Wolf Blass Winery as winner of the Robert Mondavi Winemaker of the Year Trophy from a field of hundreds of international wineries and a final shortlist of just 10.

If you are an upcoming wine connoisseur try to find some greek red wine from Santorini. Vines are grown on volcanous soil and the taste is out of this world :D

Cool! Maybe they'll help me get him off my back all the time! I need to learn to say 'please, just take the rent check and stop trying to run our lives' in greek...lol...perhaps a little humor could liven that up a bit more...lol

I gotta say that I've always enjoyed Austrailian Cabernets. For the money as they cost in the US, they can't be beat.

what shiraz are you drinking ?

we do have some nice wine I know, I'm not an afficiando myself I like a glass of icy cold beer
but I notice that in English TV series and even in modern english crime novels that characters have the odd sip of some australian wine nowadays

we had some excellent German settlers in the 19th century who understood grapes and started the whole industry

Have you ever been out to De Bortoli's Susanna?

yes, I have

but don't you realise I'm just a philistine ?

actually I have a friend who, after his father died, turned the vineyard into ..firstly .."organic' .. and now 'biodynamic' ..
and he manages quite well and always sends me a crate of something each month
but being an ignorant philistine, I keep the couple of bottles of non-alcholic grape juice, give the couple of bottles of semillon or chardonnay or reisling to friends, and keep the beautiful shiraz and cab sav for my partner who dutifully polishes off 4 bottles a month

as for me, I still prefer a beer (peasant stock)

but we do have good wine in Australia

I'd take a nice cold beer first anyday. :-) We used to use De Bortoli's as a supplier when we ran a wine label making business (Marita's family in Melbourne), and so I have always had a liking for their wines.

I suppose I should ask what the wine label business was ..:) but I won't ... far too well-mannered (?)

my friend Steve Karakatsinoudis sells most of his stuff to Swords now

do you have anything like that up there ? like swords ?

Back around 1989-1991...a hot foil printing company in Boronia. Cleanskin wines bought in, and we'd run off promotional and "as required" label batches for companies like Mercedes. You've seen bottles with "Merry Christmas to our valued customers" or product launch/commemerative type labels? That sort of thing. :)

Ahhh another Greek expatriate :D Tell Steve this ancient greek phrase (now quoted in barbaric greeglish): "Oinos eufrainei kardian anthropou" (The wine gratifies the heart of the man).

To those of you that plan to visit Athens, Greece in late August/September each year, don't miss the annual wine festival. You'll get the chance to stomp on grapes (yes, you wash your feet first) and participate in the creation of wine the way it was done since the 2nd millennium BC. Plus the wine is free!

Retsina is awesome, although a shocker of a taste and some people do not easily tolerate the resinated flavor. But it's a smooth wine that causes no headaches.

For pure nectar try the red "Mavrodafni" that will induce - when taken in ample quantities - a drinking stupor so divine that all the worries of the world become little unworthy trivialisms :D

in my street I have 3 old men who fought in the mountains ... then they came out here to live afterwards

they're very proud men and rightly so !

BTW I thought it was the english you fought in the greek resistance

I saw it in a film so it must be true

Acroplex

You must be confusing the resistance of the allies (British, Australians) against the German occupation forces in Greece, with the civil war in Greece after WW2 ended. That was a sad part of our history. BTW all is forgiven and forgotten so hello to our German friends here :D

susannad
11-03-2002, 08:54 PM
no, :) I'm not confusing the two events .. certainly not

just pointing out the english make propaganda fims too

Acroplex
11-03-2002, 08:57 PM
Well then I am confused.
Anyhow, tell the 3 old men down the street that my grandpa fought and died in the mountains so I am glad they lived long and prospered.

And let's all have some ouzo with mezes! :D
