What is your favorite dedicated config? As far as CPU/RAM... and why?

At this point, pretty much anything Intel. Most of my customers aren't interested in AMDs.

That AMD XP with gig of ram caught my eye..

AMD makes an excellent product. Too bad so many are caught up in Intel's marketing hype. We wouldn't be able to buy at these low prices if it wasn't for AMD.

Since I am guessing that your poll relates to Dedicated Servers, since this is the Dedicated Server forum, I'd like to add that the hardware configuration is only thing that needs to be considered.

What about the OS and the connectivity to the machine?

I'd rather have a Celeron/Duron box with 512MB RAM running FreeBSD or Debian GNU/Linux connected to a real provider (UUnet/Worldcom, Sprint, C&W, Level(3), Qwest, Genuity). Instead of a P4 running RedHat with 1GB RAM connected to a bargain provider like Cogent.

You need to look at the "Big Picture". ;)

He is just wondering about the hardware configuration right now.

O and I forgot why. Why? Well, I have always liked amd and they have, for the most part, out performced those intel things.

Dual P3-1.13 (1.4), 1.5-2Gb of ram

I think some Pentium III configurations should have been included in the poll.

lol i could say 32bit is for wimps :) nice 64bit sun server would be funky but you dont get them as cheap as whiteboxes lol. personally i dont have a fave company, between amd and intel, so i dont get affected by marketing hype, but at the moment i would take a p4 over an amd. A p4 with rdram is faster mhz for mhz if it has the 512k and 533mhz bus. That and intel make xeons, xeons are server chips :) they make very shiny servers, amd as yet dont have a general release server chip. right now id take the p4a over an amd of the same rated speed.

I persoanlly use AMD for my own machines, but all but a handful of customers want Intel processors. If they are will to pay for it, I say let them then.

I agree. P3's are very solid and liked by many members here...

some dual configurations might have been nice.

'if it doesn't have more than one processor, it's a computer not a server'. :D

(before arguements start...I'm just kidding around...yes, you can run servers on single processor units quite nicely)

I like the P3 as well, they are incredibly affordable for their price, now that the P4 is Intel's flagship processor.

From the list provided I would take the P4a.

Dual P3 Tualatin are really nice :)

the p3 tualatin in dual config and even in single makes a strong case for itself as a server platform. i have a mix of amd and intel servers and personal machines, i buy what i prefer at the time. as for the itanium its not really lived up to expectations in the past. it needs to mature a little.

People really voted for Celerons and Durons? I wouldn't call either a server class processor.

We find that dual P3 1.4Ghz Tualatins with 1GB of RAM work very well.

we have a duron server, with plesk and its purdy good to be honest. it dealt with a shareware clienting getting mentioned on a few sites and mailing lists on the same night. ok so its not a p4 2gig but we dont ask it to do that much lol, just pump some personal hosting. your right its not a quad xeon :) but it didnt cost the same and a quad xeon or even a dual p3 would be overkill for the task we required. horses for courses as they say :)

True, they have their uses. Not a hefty workhorse like the Tualatins though ;)

god no. lol i wouldnt put windows anywhere near it. but pushing basic hosting sites its good for a few hundred gig a month without the server load rising much beyond .3 (based on a few short runs of high intensity testing).
heh of course its not a pack mule like the p3's but then again compare the costs.
