Pre-paid annual and general FAQ:

Q: If I pay annually (or monthly) - what kind of service guarantee do I have?
A: We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee on both pre-paid quarterly/bi-annual/annual and monthly services. In short if you're not satisfied with the service for any reason within 30 days you will get a full refund.
Q: By pre-paying annually I am committing to 12 months of service - what assurances do I have the server will still be online in 12 months?
A: Serverminds has been in business over 2 years, rents and owns its infrastructure (cabinets, switches, routers, bandwidth, and the server hardware), and has long-term contractual commitments in both data center locations we have a presence. We are not a reseller and will deal directly with any hardware failures - hard drives, memory, and general system issues.
Q: Can I try the service out - that is, pay monthly initially - before deciding to commit to the 12-month pre-payment and get the same discount?
A: Yes, no problem. You can switch your billing cycle to annual - with the discount - at a later time.
Q: Can I resell the servers?
A: Yes if you would like to take advantage of our great monthly or annual pricing and resell the server for your own customers, you may do so as long as you comply with our Terms of Service. (http://www.serverminds.com/en_tos.html)

Your topic title is misleading, the system specified doesn't start at $49, it starts at $59. You might want to correct the topic title, it's mis-advertising.

It equals out to $49 per month if paid annually. The title is a marketing scheme that many hosts on WHT use to get you to look at the offer. It's definitely not as bad as the host at WHT that posts a server for $99 per month in the title and once you read the offer, it jumps to $399 after three months.

As Xenos said, the $49/mo is based on the annual pre-paid pricing. That may appear misleading but as Xenos said it IS a marketing technique. I realize some people may consider the title misleading but unfortunately I can't help that.

It is clear in the ad itself that the $49/mo price is based on annual pre-paid pricing. I don't think I hide that.

I try to indicate the normal monthly pricing as well for every pre-paid offer - I realize I missed it in this case but will make sure and not miss it next time.

I've found that when I explicitly state the annual cost in the title the response to the ads is much lower. I've tried stating the annual PLUS monthly in the titles and the response is also much lower. Right or wrong - and it's a matter of opinion I think - indicating the lowest potential monthly cost has the best results. I don't resort to any "bait-and-switch" tactics in the pricing model though I did miss the month-to-month pricing in the title offer just to make it clear there is a difference vs. the pre-paid pricing.

Hi, I've been seeing these ServerMinds offers over the weeks and I'm pretty impressed with the features and price, but I have some questions that can hopefully be answered, by serverminds or someone else, before I make the jump:

Do you have many customers from the UK / Europe? I'm gonna be hosting several websites and an application server. Half the visitors come from the US and most of the rest from Europe. Would both sets of customers get decent speeds if the server is based in the US or should I just opt for a European server? Or get both?

I'm in the UK and I've been downloading your two test files throughout the day and have been getting vastly varying speeds. I've also found that DC1 always give me the faster transfer rate, sometimes even over 3-4 times faster. Is this how it's supposed to be?
How good an indication are these two servers of the speed that I would end up getting on my server? Does me being in the UK make a significant difference; would my US visitors get a much faster rate? Also, I've found that the test files for European hosts are faster and a more consistent speed, is that how it should be for me based on my location?

How much do you charge for extra traffic and do you offer an unlimited option?
If I ordered my server today or tomorrow morning (bear in mind I'm talking UK times) would it be ready to use sometime on Monday you think, or does it take longer over the weekend to set it up?
How quick is your support if something goes wrong with the hardware or for general queries?
Finally, how can you afford to offer such great deals? ;)

This'll be my first dedicated server so your help and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers. :)

Yes we do have customers from the UK and from Europe. Don't know the exact numbers off the top of my head but there are quite a few.

I'm in the UK and I've been downloading your two test files throughout the day and have been getting vastly varying speeds. I've also found that DC1 always give me the faster transfer rate, sometimes even over 3-4 times faster. Is this how it's supposed to be?

One DC1 is more Verizon (former MCI Worldcom/UUNet)+XO dominant and DC2 is more Level(3)+XO BGP bandwidth dominant. Speed variability is the norm I would think though I would think you'd get in relatively the same range, give or take a few hundred KB/s. In any case I wouldn't expect you to always get exactly the same speed.

How good an indication are these two servers of the speed that I would end up getting on my server? Does me being in the UK make a significant difference; would my US visitors get a much faster rate? Also, I've found that the test files for European hosts are faster and a more consistent speed, is that how it should be for me based on my location?

One of my test servers is a VM (DC1) the other is a physical server (DC2). Speed is pretty consistent when I test it for either location but of course I am very close to them. You will likely have many more hops between there and the US. Other server providers may have a broader bandwidth mix and may be more consistent in terms of speed. I think the mix at the two DCs I'm in is good but it won't be perfect for everyone and I don't expect it to be. Most of my customers are quite thrilled with the speeds especially in DC2, where I am uplinked at gigabit to XO and Level(3), especially Far East customers.

How much do you charge for extra traffic and do you offer an unlimited option?

No "unlimited" bandwidth options. 1000GB packages are $25/mo. If you really wanted a lot of bandwidth we could discuss that.

If I ordered my server today or tomorrow morning (bear in mind I'm talking UK times) would it be ready to use sometime on Monday you think, or does it take longer over the weekend to set it up?

If you were to make a decision soon - e.g., next 24 hours - I would have it setup by Monday for sure.

How quick is your support if something goes wrong with the hardware or for general queries?

DC1 has a 24/7 NOC and can be available for temote hands 24/7. DC2 does not have a 24/7 NOC but many of my machines have remote power and console options. I am presently working with a person who helps me with 24/7 support duties, installs, etc.

We generally respond to most email queries within 4 hours.

Finally, how can you afford to offer such great deals? ;)

I have multiple sources to get the hardware at very reasonable prices. Being close to the SF Bay Area where huge quantities of servers end up in the liquidation pipeline helps.

So for an additional 1000gb, you only change 25 dollars a month?

Thanks for your detailed reply yesterday serverminds. I've just ordered your advertised Dual 2.4Ghz server and just paid the invoice!

I've gone for monthly billing for now, if everything works out nicely then I'll upgrade to the 12 month plan instead.

Looking forward to checking this baby out when it's all ready...

Cheers. :)

What is the different between "Dedicated serial console port" and "KVM IP Port - permanent"?

Hi serverminds, just a quick question. I'm still finding that here in the UK I always get a much faster transfer rate for the test file on DC1 compared to DC2. Would it be possible for you to put my server in DC1 when you're setting it up? (If you think it'll make a difference to my own server.)

Cheers,

Dedicated serial console is a permanent serial port console connection suitable only for text display. KVM IP Port is a full KVM console port (i.e., full VGA graphics) that is accessible over the network.

Hello, I have a quick question for you. In your order configuration form I can read "250GB Hard Drive - Add 250 gigabytes of IDE or SATA disk storage to your server. ($35.00 USD One Time + $0.00 USD Setup Fee)". Does this mean that the server will have an additional hard disk or that the original 160 GB hard disk will be replaced with the 250 GB?
Thank you.

Depends on the server. Many servers are unfortunately constrained to one disk. The P4 3.0Ghz machines, for example, are form factor limited to one disk. The only machine I have right now that can have two disks are the single Opteron 150 servers and the dual 2.4Ghz Xeon machines which can have up to 3x146gb SCSI drives in them.

If it's dual-disk capable the one-time fee will be for an additional 250gb drive + the existing 160gb drive.
