Run a Promo and wheel them in.

Before we officially opened.

I collected up a bunch of people I had made friends with over the years playing computer games online and got them to sign up for small hosting for their clans or whatever.

Once we opened ... it wasn't as dramatic as I was expecting. They started to trickle in over the first couple days.

For me it was like 2-3 days, but I was investing money into advertising with adwords and other advertisement places.

You may want to check out hostingcatalog, they have good rates on advertising and they're good for newer companies trying to grow.

It took me about 8 months for clients to start comming in although I didn't advertise much and in the meantime my hosting business was funded by the income of my other projects.

I ran an ad here, advertising that I was looking for a server in exchange for admin services, some 7 years ago.

Within 24 hours, the ad was responded to and I had my first "client", who not only gave me the server but paid rather well as well, and encouraged me to start doing this full time, which I have been since.

Same here. We advertised locally in Toronto and surrounding areas to small businesses. We got a few sign-ups about 3 weeks after that and that is before we officially brought our company online and then registered it.

Usually takes a week or so; be careful though, watch out for fraud.

Within 24 hours, i found that you dont even need a website to make sales these days :) Its all about who know know, and how many people they know :)

We exactly did the same. From 2002 to 2004, made friends and when I started my company, I already had a client base of 35+

My first online order came after 4 months though!

So that is what you condsider the norm? I would highly doubt that. You must've had absolutely no advertising or expensive services.

It took us a couple days to get going but each signup just seemed to bring more in :)

I'm proud to say that we have launched our hosting company and have yet to get any customers. :) But yes, I have advertised on a few places so far and that's exactly why i came here, was to look for extra support on my hosting site.

I started because i was building sites for friends. So when I launched my site I already had a bunch of clients even if most of them were my friends.
