Does anyone have a listing (or knowledge) of what different .com sites charge for additional years? I've heard horror stories of GoDaddy charging totals of like $500+ for the second year.

I want to start a web business as an affiliate for other companies/services.

I have NO clue what to do, but I have read enough from Google searches to stay away from free domains. So I am considering paying for a domain & hosting.

My problem is this: the sites such as GoDaddy tell you what you will pay for the first year. I am not comfortable with paying for a year and then getting a bill for the second year at an exorbitant rate.

Hopefully I will make money as an affiliate and that won't be a problem, but I want to cover ALL my bases first!

Someone PLEASE help me with this! I am very computer literate when it comes to PC issues and repair - but not at all when it comes to website startup.

I have used Godaddy for years. Modest price increases are inevitable but are pretty much in line with what everyone else is charging. You always have the option of transferring your domain to a different Registrar, if you decide you do not like Godaddy, any time before your domain expires.

Years ago Godaddy listed what their domain name renewal prices were on their site. But it seams they no longer do so.

I am also using 1&1 and Namecheap which I prefer over Godaddy for purchasing domains.

Edit: I found the price list here (https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/jump_pages/chart.asp?isc=goaz2001ai&se=%2B&app%5Fhdr=0&tld=com&ci=14422&chart=1).

Thanks! That at least gives me some peace of mind! I had read from Google searches of $500+ renewal fees. I just didn't want to get a site established and have to pay like that if my affiliate status didn't pay off.

I guess I need to calculate the overall fees for a year next. Registration and hosting.

I am SUCH a newbie!

Usually renewal costs the same as new registration.
Just check out sites like moniker, name.com, namecheap.com and godaddy and you will have an idea of renewal fees.
Also scout for coupon codes and you may get a reduced renewal price.

Normally renewal fees are almost similar as of new registration unless at the time of registration you have registered the domain in some promo offer.

You always have the option of transferring the domains if you are not satisfied with the current one..There are many providers who have lower rates for transfers as compared to registration / renewal

I originally used Enom, but switched to Godaddy back in 2004 (and would not use anyone else now).

I suppose if you have some doubts regarding that you need to ask and save (if needed) the ticket for the future.
Hope that will make you more patient.
Good luck
