How do you think these huge one click file hosting websites made it so big?
Is it just luck?
Is it in the way they promote?
How do you think they got so big and make so much money?
Do they use companies to promote them?
If they do which ones?

Offering a better service than competitors, before they had any large competitors.

Both sites are powered by the eastern european conglomerates..

Offers better services and they aren't too picky about illegal content. The illegal content is the big thing.

I agree with @matthall28, offering a better service is one of the key elements. RapidShare for example is probably the most simple out of them all, RapidShare is the Google of file hosting.

The illegal content is the big thing. Come to think of it, Youtube and others thrived on that as well. Cost-less risk-less copyright infringement is one huge popularity creator. Start with Napster, Kazaa and end with whatever new method is now popular out there. :)

I think they are only popular with illegal content. You hardly see any public web sites hosting content through Rapidshare or any other one click hosts.

I know they brag about 'finally attach large files through email!' and whatnot, but everyone that i talk too just links to the original site or they send it through the post.

By turning a blind eye to illegal content.
